 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
The motor was given to me so that's what I have to go with. I'm also building pods for the back. Just have to finish welding them up.

 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
Are you building a long tail or a surface drive? That will determine what size prop you use.

 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
Longtail. Almost complete. I'm hoping the pods I designed and cut out will help. I based them off of Beavertails' pods. Well just see. I know longtails aren't fast, but here in Arkansas we dont deal with mud much. Mainly stumps, debris under the surface and logs in the flooded timber.

 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
sftull, what makes you think my boat won't plane out. Just curious. Ive delt with outboards for as long as I can remember. Still a little green with the mud motors, but loving it. My project has rubbed off on my father in law. Now were talking about building him one.

 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
11 hp in mudmotor isn't equal to 11 hp in outboard.
I had a 13 with a 1442 and it was a great one man rig, but add a second man and some decoys and it fell on it's face

 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
If you want speed, then build a surface drive.

 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
How wide is your hull?
A 13 hp is the biggest single cylinder, after that there is a 14 hp briggs v-twin but if you decide to go with a v-twin get the 23 Briggs (same weight as 14)

 Re: 11 HP HOME BUILD
Modern outboards rate hp at prop - your engine is rated at the shaft outboards are in-line thrust with the hull - longtails are angled thrust Johnson 9.9 may run a 10in. pitch prop - you are looking at a 4in. pitch prop. Every revolution would theoretically move the prop 10 inches forward versus the 4 inches - that gives the outboard more than twice the distance covered for the same rpms Outboards = fast in clean water Longtails = torque advantage in soup
Your hull will have to achieve a certain speed under different loads to "plane". You can only go so fast with a 4in prop, but you will go with confidence.
