I'm gonna finish the rear seals tonight and take some more pics to finish this thread up. I hope this thread helps folks just trying to pay some back from all the help I get from this site.

Thanks for the thread HS. I'm sure it will help someone in the near future. I can tell you from experience, loosening the motor mount bolts (not removing them) is the easiest way to get the belt both on and off. I was able to just push the cleaned up belt back down to the bottom of the belt housing (prior to mounting the outdrive) and slip it onto the front pulley once the LU is bolted back onto the BH. Then just tip the motor back and slide it over the top pulley.

I do have one question tho...are you sure the two rear seals go back in opposite directions? I'm pretty sure mine both came out facing inward (cup side toward the boat) and are slightly spaced apart from each other.

I'll PM Max. Have him read over the thread. He rebuilds these units all the time and helped me thru mine.

I've always taken them out and re installed them both lips facing the prop. Basically you cannot over pressurize the lower unit. Grease can slip past seal but water cannot come in.
Really I doubt it will be an issue having them oppose each other.

I don't blame you there. Just keep an eye for grease around that wear sleeve. If you're not changing grease through the season, it should be fine. But you may want to check it periodically to make sure it's not getting watered down. Thats just me tho....I tend to be anal about that crap.

All your answers to the way the seals should be installed are in previous threads. Next time take a sec to search. It would have saved you a lot of trouble. I do applaud you putting this together.

Any suggestions on removing the front seal wear ring?... Mine doesn't want to budge..thinking about putting a torch on it..

If you're replacing it, just put a pipe wrench on it to get it turning, then some pliers, channel locks, or vise grips and tap the tool lightly with a hammer to slide the sleeve off.

If you're reusing because it's not worn, then a strap wrench or something to get a good grip like that should work.

Put pipe wrench on it, got it to budge a little. Tried the vise grips and a rubber mallet, to beat it off. Still can't slide it down the shaft at all..thought about using some BP blaster under it. I'm worried I'm going to bend it and get it stuck on the shaft. Have you ever heard of someone having to cut it off?

changing mine at the moment and cannot get the taper ring out of the pull, beat the crap the of out it with a rubber mallet, soaked it in pb blaster, put a whole lot of pressure on the middle allen wrench hole and nothing, even tried heating it up and nothing worked. any thing else to try ?

Run the allen bolt in the remove hole, tight and they usually pop right off. If not, get it tight and smack the gear next to the taper lock. If rebuilt numerous GT lower not one was a bitch to remove.

Post subject:  Re: GATORTAIL LOWER UNIT SEAL REPLACEMENT

Soak it in PB Blaster for a day or two then beat that bitch some more

How much water in the LU grease warrants a seal change? I am not seeing any grease in the belt housing. I am noticing grease around the lower seal/prop; not a whole lot, but I have had raffia grass wrapped up in it and fishing line... I just pumped in new grease and 10 or so drops of water came out. I pump new grease in every 5-6 trips. Previously have seen a drop or two.

How about a link to both of these replacement parts.

That would be terrific.
