Post subject:  GDSD...Do I need a new prop?

Hey guys,

I have a 1748 Uncle J with a 27hp GDSD. I ran the boat in the sand on the Texas coast for about 2 years. It seems like I've lost a bit of speed and its throwing a big rooster tail. My Tiny Tach has died so I don't know what type of RPMs I'm running WOT.

I know next to nothing about props, but I'm assuming I need a new one or get this one worked. It measures fine, but I've got a couple dings. I definitely need some help/advice.

Thoughts? Thanks guys!

It looks like you need a new prop.
But the first step is to get a tach and see what your rpms are.
If you’ve run sand for 2 years, your prop is about toast.
I always found that the GDSD’s didn’t throw a big rooster tail, maybe trim down a bit.

Buy a new prop and get the old one reworked, never hurts to have backup.

Thanks guys! Got a new tach on order. Coming tomorrow.

Should I just buy a new one from GD or are there better/cheaper options out there? I searched around a little bit but I just found more expensive props.

Hill Marine has 2 blade for 219.00 plus shipping, multiple pitch options.

not on their website, but if you change to a 2 blade -- need to go up in pitch and/or diameter. that is where a tach comes in handy for hitting the WFO rpm range in the sweet spot.

You don't necessarily need a new prop.

Send it to get re-worked. It still has life left.

Diameter means nothing....

Measure ACROSS blade width - new is 3 1/2" - 3 1/4" lost some performance - under 3" junk...

PS - never seen anyone properly rework a 3 blade !
They over-cup it and you can't keep it down on a GDSD...
Just buy a new prop and keep old one as is as a spare...

If anyone can properly rework it, it would be baggy in Houma. Dude is on point.
