I have an opportunity to purchase a brand new 2017 GTR 37. This one has electric trim, EFI, and reverse. I have been doing some research and came up with a question. First off, how can I tell the difference between the cast unit and the machined one. Also, what makes the machines one so much more appealing? I will try to attach photos to see if we can figure it out.

The skeg and reverse plate bolt on and off if it’s machined. That one looks cast to me. There was an issue with them cracking. Not sure what years (if not all cast lowers) were affected.

It's cast. See the tapered prop shaft housing? The machined are a solid piece of pipe the same diameter from one end to the other. If it's a good deal, fine, but the cast is not nearly as resilient as the machined.

You cant bend the cast lower units to help reduce tiller torque either. The only time my cast lower cracked was due to throwing a blade of a prop and the vibration of the unbalanced prop cracked it all to hell.

It was ultimately a bad casting on the prop and I got a complete new lower under warranty, but it did suck.
