Post subject:  Cutting the skeg?

I saw a post by Willie Fast the other day about cutting the skeg a bit to get more water to the prop. I looked up the performance skeg and it appears a simple cut should do it but I don’t want to go grinding away on my skeg.

I also want to hear some feed back with people with experience with it and if it’s really worth the hassle.

I’ve got a 2018 GTR37 XD for reference.

It’s worth it. Willey’s templet is the correct one for performance. It really makes a little difference when paired with a worked prop but only after the skeg has been cut. Don’t get a prop worked and then cut the skeg because it changes the working rpms

If you google, Willie Fast Performance Prop, it’ll bring up his Facebook post. I have a screenshot I’ll post

Thanks. Prob not much to be done with the cast skeg I'm guessing.

I actually went ahead and did this. A new skeg is only $65 so I figured it was worth the risk. Haven’t had a chance to test the performance or speed increase but it was pretty simple to remove the lower skeg bolts and make the cut and sand it smooth. Took maybe 45 minutes

Takes 5 min to do so I figured it’s worth a shot. With a stock 40xd motor and stock prop I didn’t really gain any performance, it did hurt. I have a prop getting worked now so I’ll update when I run it.

I did this years ago on the Prodrive to allow more vegetation and muck to the prop for 4wd but I guess you open water gtr pirates wouldn't know about that.

You know I looked into getting a Prodrive once, but I don’t have a vagina so I got a Gatortail

If I asked for a good comeback, I’d scrape it off your mother’s teeth.

But I am glad you took the time to look up my post to see I have a Havoc

I ain't waiting for that lower to spin around wiggling thru this shit, hydro or ratchet either one. It's all about what you need for where you play

Does anyone have a template for a modified Prodrive skeg?

Post subject:  Re: Cutting the skeg?

Can you send a picture of your skeg? From what I can tell from mine, the part I can out lines up even with my prop just so water can use the whole prop. If you send a pic I may be able to help you out. You also might be able to message Willie Fast and see what he says since he actually knows what he’s doing :D

Wanted to post an update since I got to take a test run on flat water and see what the difference was.

Flat water with no current I saw again of roughly 1.5-2mph. The biggest difference was it made it a lot easier to steer with my tiller handle and seemed to take some of the torque and push I always had. Only downside, which really isn’t one, is the rooster tail isn’t as “wide” as before, but it’s still pretty high. Overall I’m pretty stoked with the results.
