Post New GT 17x50 with 40 hp MudBuddy
MM Brand: Mud Buddy
Horsepower: 40 Kohler
Boat Brand: Gator Trax
Boat Size: 17 x 50
Boat Layout:

Speeds | Shallow Water:
Speeds | Deep Water: 20.1 GPS
Total Boat Load With Gear Etc: me (225), 8 year old, 3 year old, wife, cooler, bowfish deck on
Conditions Tested In: Choppy

Comments:

Really expected a little more speed, but haven't had a chance to go test without all the people and extra stuff. The motor sounds like it's not wound all the way up, but it's clocking 3440 RPM. It's taking me a little getting used to, but I've already been to several coves that I couldn't get my other boat close to. I liked the rear seat when I got it, but after driving a bit I wish it wasn't there. It's kind of in the way when standing and driving.

Is 20.1 a typo, cause if not that motor should be turning out bigger numbers.

Nope. That's all she's got. It only topped 20 once, usually was 19.5. I have a Kohler 27 on my Dixie Chopper mower and it runs out about 3700 rpm and sounds WAY smoother. Of course, this MM has dual BPS exhaust, but it just don't sound right. It doesn't plane out at all.

You might want to check up on that motor because that isnt right at all! You should be running atleast around 3700 RPM's and atleast 26mph!

20.1 mph is not that bad of a speed.. Depending on how big Wife is....

Weight is a big factor with Mud Motors.

It just doesn't sound to me like the motor is winding up like it should, but I'm new to this type of motor with dual exhaust. I was wondering how heavy the bow platform is, maybe that weight is keeping the front down into the water and not letting it plane up. The gas tank, two big Optima batteries, and the charging system are up front under the extended deck, and the trolling motor on the platform. What should my rpm be out of water?

Is there another area on here where this topic would be better posted?

Man sounds like a nice rig. Maybe the motor has some problems. I spoke with Clint yesterday at Mud Buddy and he said they have been having problems with this motor and are probaly gonna quit making it due to this fact. I am looking at getting rid of my longtail and getting a sd and he told me to stay clear of that motor. They are really pushing the new 45 horse Black Death and said it was a awesome motor. Hope you get things worked out with yours.
