Post subject: | New Phowler 2072 Exxxtreme Jon Boat with Stock 36 Pro-Drive |
Here is our new 2072 Exxxtreme Jon. We started working on these over a year and a half ago, built the first ones last year and ran them this winter. They are a big boat, but we were very nicely surprised how well they did with various motors. Here are some pictures and test results. Boat: 2072 with 26" deep sides. This is a two piece hull, 5086, .125 Commercial rated. Tested with tank, battery and safety equipment on board. Motors: New, Stock 36 PD and New Stock 50 HP Suzuki Four Stroke. General Boat characteristics on the water: Boat sits level, with one person draft at rest was about 2.5" at rear, with three adults, draft was 4" at rear. Speeds: Stock 36 HP Pro-Drive with one person, 200#, top speed 28.8 MPH, average speed 27.4 MPH. With Three adults, 200#, 190# and 245# top speed 27.5 MPH, average speed was 26.3 MPH. This was all deep water. With Stock 50HP Suzuki 4 Stroke - One person 39.7 MPH (we could only open it up for a few minutes on a new motor. This was with a 13 pitch prop, it was hitting rev limiter, so it needs more prop.) With three men, one being 275# we hit 34.7 MPH consistantly, again, only opening up for a minute or two and with same prop. Performance: Boat planed in about 10 feet in all cases, no problem getting on step. In the limited shallow water we could find the boat did great, handled exceptionally well, no sliding and on step in 6" of water in no time at all. These are really big boats we designed for large blinds and dual motors, but they will perform with a single MM or with a modest outboard very well. We think they will make a nice addition to the Phowler Line this year. Feedback is welcome. Thanks, PW |

Good numbers considering the hull is like a floating dance floor, I remember you mentioning that you getting ready to test the motors on it. |

Muddoctor, What is the bottom profile ??? Appears to be completely flat with a "hook" at both outer edges, if yes, does it run the length of the boat ??? |

It is a double tapered chine hull bend, it dies out at the rake. We can do a square chine boat, but the demand is not there to do them for stock up here. Most guys seem to prefer the handling of the doubled tapered chine hulls for turning and minimal sliding. PW |

Got a chance to run the boat again on Saturday with the Suzuki then demoed three guys today with our modded 32 PD. Here are the results: With the 50 Suzuki and four guys we ran an average of 33 MPH, still needs a different prop however, not getting the RPM's were they need to be. With the 32 Modded PD, in a pouring cold rain and sleet we ran 22 mph against the current with three guys (220,250, 210), out of current we ran 24.8 MPH. Motor was having some issues with the wet air cleaner. We added two more guys, one 350 and one 275 for a total of five guys, ran 22.5 out of the current. Come back with three with the current and against the wind we ran 25.6 with three guys, so we averaged about 25.2 with three men deep water. What was amazing is that this big boat will plane at 14 mph and maintain plan at that speed without plowing water. PW |

Boat looks really stout with all those cross braces, any noticable flex with all the "beef on board" in that test run ??? Also on that "double tapered chine hull bend" - is there any extra beef above or inside the "hook" - I ask cause we have loads of logs to jump and sand and oyster reefs too.... Seems that a lot of load will be on a very small surface area.... Just wondering if it is solid or hollow... But I really like the thought of lift like a square with no slide... |

I was refering to the "fin" at the outer edge - what the builder calls a "double tapered chine hull bend" .... Likely the wrong term here, but I used to have a slolom from Connelly called "The Hook" and it was a water carving SOB.... You will also hear "hook" as a long dent in the bottom from running over cypress knees and such.... My oldest boat has more of those "hooks" than a trotline.... If boat has cross braces the dents in front of those are often called a "crown" I believe... |

The "fin" as you are calling it is what we call planing tabs. They are for adjusting how the boat runs, you can bend them up or down slightly to make the front run high or low depending on load and how you want the boat to run. They work very well for fine tuning the way the boat runs with various motors and hps. PW |
