Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
Im looking into buying a new motor and I really want reverse I like the Gator-tail but i dont know how powerful their reverse and i believe that the prodrive is full power but i do not know I would just like more power to pull me off of bogs and such that i cant get off of going forward easily, can i Just get some opinions and pros and cons of each motor or people who have one tell me a little about them...... Thanks

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
Pd Full power reverse gtr less pull in reverse
Id go testdrive them and make your own decision.

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
All depends on what you plan on doing with it. Also, were your gonna be running it can make a difference in what you'll need.

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
I'm a new ProDrive owner and went through that decision last fall. To me, there were two considerations: Do I need instantaneous reverse? Do I need full power in reverse. My answers were no and yes, so I went with a prodrive. It takes 5-7 seconds for a PD to cycle into reverse. The GTR is instantaneous. I hunt tidal marshes, so I end up in situations where the tide goes out under my boat. The full power reverse drags the boat off of the bank in short order and can also back out of difficult situations like creeks and guts too narrow to turn around in.
With regard to their performance in the mud, mine does everything I expect from it and then some. However, that is a point of great contention on this site. It will make for a very amusing read if you take the time to catch up on that topic!
I spoke to both manufacturers at length before I made my purchase. They are both easy to contact, great to work with, build a quality product, and stand behind it. So long as you pick the right one for YOUR needs, you can't go wrong either way.

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
The main difference (IN MY AREA) I see besides the PD having full power reverse is that the Gator-Tail can trim down MUCH further than the PD allowing you to get out easier & faster.
Pros & Cons to any motor go test drive them ALL

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
If you don't have a chance to run both. The gatortail in thicker mud will have a slight advantage over a PD. Gatortail will also have more tiller torque due to the longer shaft so long runs can be more of a challenge for some. Instant reverse is nice. PD is easier run, and FPR will pull you off Bogs No Problem. The lower unit design is a better match for open water and big Water.

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
I fish alot and that instant reverse would be nice when running lines. The GT can get lower in that thick mud you see folks running at the mud runs. But in reality how often would you get your rig into that situation unless you were trying to. Depends on the areas you run but I bet you could avoid it most of the time. We dont have anything like that around here. Either one will probably do everything you need it to and then some. They will all get you stuck like a mofo if your not careful.

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
A pro drive with fpr and instant reverse would be perfect around here.
You need to decide wether you want reverse for convienence or full function

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
Go run them both as people said...
Gatortails are great in forward and in mud
Prodrives are great in forward and ok in the mud untill you stop..
As said the prodrive will not dig as deep as a gatortail in mud.
I find that the reverse for the prodrive in better in thick vegetation. In different mud conditions the prodrive reverse will not do much though.
The gatortail reverse can be buried down in the mud to dig a hole although I find that when in thick vegetation its not as helpful as the prodrive full power.
PS I have nothing against gatortail. Its all about what you need and the terrain you run.

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
One thing I like about the reverse of a Prodrive is that if you ever get too shallow and can't get up, you can dig you a hole forwards and backwards long enough for you to hop up back on top of the mud..

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
I did my research I drove and rode in both. I like the instant rever and the gator tail handles better but the reverse sucks ass even in deep water. The prodrive has more torque but got the fpr for when you need to get it. Also like the momentary button on my prodrive and the twist throttle doesnt have a cable to freeze up.

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
I agree with most of what has been said so far, the GT reverse works, but it pull just like an outboard reverse, 40% of the power in reverse vs. forward. It will pull you back in soft, really soft mud, but up here over semi hard bottom, heavy weeds or hard bottom it does nothing without 12" of water or more. Second in the really nasty stuff leading with the prop you can damage it, we have seen 4-5 with twisted shafts from backing into a stump in reverse. Again, they make a great conventional reverse, but that is what it is, a conventional reverse.
On the other side of the coin the PD reverse has the power to lift the enter boat and put all the water under the boat, it leads with the skeg so we do not see them damaged from use in the wood. Down side it is slower to use, but the new auto makes it alot easier then the manual option. I think it does alot better in the really nasty stuff and frankly I have not seen a situation the GT can get out of that the PD did not get out of faster in reverse, but I have see many situations the GT reverse did nothing and the PD reverse walked right out of. For real hunting conditions in our neck of the woods the PD has it hands down. The GT is a bit faster, the PD handles easier.
This is what I have witnessed running both extensively and one the water with my rig and some of my buddies rigs in real hunting situations.
As said, don't take anyones word as gossip, try to run them both yourself and them form your own opinion of which one will be meet your needs in your situation.

Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
I really can't stand this forken dude!! The one thing he said and think about it!! He said in hard bottom Pd rules and a gt needs 12 inches of water!! Everybody on mmt knows that in hard bottoms the worst motor out their is the Pd because of the oversized lower unit!! Please feel free to chime in on this one!!

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
Hard bottom sucks if your trying to get on step. From what I've seen, it's like the PD's take a while to bite in shallow water while the others tend to go. Where I hunt / ride, you need to get moving to get up. When you can't grab a little, you sit there a while.

Wheeew shiat......i'm gonna go out on a limb here but i have to agree with Terry, I can walk my lower unit across the top of a hard bottom and back the boat up pretty good if i can say so myself, there are tricks

Re: Gator-Tail vs. Pro drive
about ten guys and myself had this same argument lastnight. i have a gtr and in hard bottom there is nothing but a go-devil long tail that will get up in shallower water then me. i have seen plenty of prodrives stuck in real hard bottom i.e. the delta. the only time i see a pd is better if you have a ditch 4' wide with high banks on each side full of packed lillies and you can turn the motor around and back up but thats about it.
