Im having trouble getting my boat on plane. Sunday I had myself (240) and two other guys (220 and 230) and full hunting load including 6 gallons of gas, battery, 7 mojos, 2 1/2 dozen dekes, 3 guns, and blind bags. I was running in 20+ feet of water and the boat just would not get up on plane. I have a 1751 excel vf4 with a mb 35 la special.

Any suggestions on where to place everything? I have no problem getting on plane with 2 people no matter where the load is placed.

Place 1 guy,4mojos,a gun,and his blind bag on the
dock.tell him to get his own boat. :)
If ya boat has a v bottom,it prolly will never plane all that weight.
Not familiar wit mudbuddy but try trimming a bit higher than normal to bring up rpms then bump the trim back down to bite. Or go where its shallow to get up.

IMHO You should have plenty of power for that load. You just need to experiment a bit with the trim and the load distribution. As the previous poster indicated, you may need to trim the motor up a bit and get some of your guests to move back a bit to let the bow get up. Once you find the right combination, you should be able to break it out easily each time.

Was the motor bogging down (not developing rpm's)? Or was the prop blowing out (max rpms/hitting the governor, and not going anywhere)?

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

you need more motor for that load.

7 mojos....holy shit..
if you can afford that you can afford heads and cam for your motor

BoatDr, the motor was bogging down. I could trim the motor way down and it would speed up for a little while but as soon as I trimmed up the rpms would get really high and the boat just wouldnt go. The fastest i went was like 15.

your prop may be worn also. I noticed a gradual decline in performance on my boat over time. It got to the point where I couldn't put three guys in the boat and get on plane. We put a new prop on and baaaaammmmmm, back to normal!

Its a brand new boat and motor. It has only been in the water 3 or 4 times so I know its not the prop. I run hard and soft bottom. It just depends on where I hunt.

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

It only takes 1 trip to burn a prop up. Actually about 15 min if you try hard enough

I'd call your dealer (or who ever you bought it from) and try a new prop.

And yea, 15 minutes in hard/sand bottom will destroy a prop if you dont know what you are doing.

It has a tiger prop on it. I thought that was the best out there?

No props the best when you throw it to a sand bar. Just go measure it and see what your working with

Ok. I'm about to have a couple thousand dollars come my way so I'm thinking about carbs, heads, and exhaust.

Cam, heads, and exhaust.

Do you think that would be better?

What would give me the most speed?

Carb, heads, exhaust, cam, pistons, rods, rocker arms and push rods.

This is what irritates me about you people. This man obviously doesn't know enough about his boat or motor to know if the performance he's getting is normal or not. You don't know what kind of boat he has, how the weight was distributed, or anything else! If it isn't doing what he thinks it should be doing, the talk automatically turns to mods. Since when is "dropping a cam in" an easy answer!!!??

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

Personally i liked the Carb Kit and the heads, exhaust combination. But for that load i would go as far as to say a cam heads exhaust the works, thats an awful lot of weight for any motor, either that or upgrade to a 45mag cause your gonna need some torque to get all that moving forward and on plane, if you were running 15 thats not to bad for the weight you described

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

I'd do carb, heads, and exhaust.

Read his first got damn post cruise that'll automatically tell you he needs more horsepower no matter where you put the weight.....go play and let the grown ups talk.

That size boat with a stock motor should plane that load and run over 20 mph pretty easily, if you have the correct boat, you know how to drive, your motor is running right, and your prop is in good shape.

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

Get everybody in the boat one day after a hunt, and move them around/play with the load until you get it right. That's a lot of weight, a longer hull would def. help, my 1651 doesn't like huge loads either.

It probably wouldn't hurt to have your motor gone through and tuned up too, since it got worse over time. I bet your valves are out of adjustment by now, and that may be the cause. Mine need adjusting as we speak.

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

I wouldn't complain about the 15 MPH if I was planed out when I was running but when you ain't on plane and hit some hard bottom it makes for a long push to the blind.

Hell he's got 690lb's of just warm bodies, not to mention another 200+ in gear including the boat, them F-4s aren't the lightest boats.

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

I know it is a new motor, but you may want to do a leak down test on your heads. One of you valves may be floating, and you are losing compression, and therefore losing power. Briggs heads are notorious for this... Just a thought before you spend a bunch of money on Mods, but I would do heads and exhaust first, and then cam, and then carb if you are not happy. But this is just me.

Post subject:  Re: Getting on plane

I like the stock governor set up and the load carrying ability you gain from the cam. That is why I say cam, heads, and exhaust. I would actually do pistons and rods before the carb, unless I got a really good deal on a carb. That's just me.

I'm not saying he "needs" mods. He said he came in to some money and was looking in to heads, carb, and exhaust. Just said, I would do cam before carb.
