Let's open up an arguement for all motors- Which is best all around while running logs and stumps? GO!

Yeaa longtails are real nice for logs, and I have a PD, and I'm not sure man I hate stumps. There's no way I'll run them. However, my uncle has a GDSD and he hits stumps wide open without throwin them out the boat.

Grow Balls and stay out from under the tiller, most people around The ArkLaTex that run stumps run PD's.

And a LT is best in the stumps, especially slow rolling.

i've lifted my transom and motor up on stumps... while the PD worls very well in the logs and stumps a longtail does best in just stumps


but i run stumps,logs and thick floaton and lillies.... the fpr is a must

The skeg on a PD is superior to other MM's I'll admit, however, it is rear heavy as opposed ta a GDSD that would easily pop up when encountering a log.

As stated before, long tails are the best fer logs.

GDSD wide ass open! You can truck them all day, just keep your shins clear of the tiller handle.

well you can say scared call it what you want but I hear stories of people stripping gears in their PDs from running logs hard and I'm not trying to mess up my prop either

Are yall running a log every now and then or is it an area covered in stumps?

every time I use my boats i am in them... hard solid cypress logs and stumps with a few oaks as wheel...

I know this wont work for mud or veggies, but when I run in stumps or when the river is really low, I pull the tiller adjustment pin out so that if it hits hard the motor will kick up and the tiller handle will float and not try to break your leg.

I stole this from OwenDickeson, he runs these area's like these with a PD along with many others.
No more problems than other brands that have run these places.

havent heard "stumpgrinder" in a while. My PD runs stumps all the time an no major problems. 200 plus hrs and all i got are bad seals.

Lots of stumps, cypress knees, logs around here. One particular lake looks nice and smooth but many years ago some smart MF'rs apparently cut a cypress forest down and the stumps are 2-3" under the water surface. It has claimed a many of outboard. I've hit a countless number of them WOT with a loud smack, a slight pause, a quick SOB!, and back in the throttle...no worries

Don't matter the brand, if you abuse them enough, they'll ALL break. It's not the WOT skeg hits that do the damage, it's the continuous prop strikes at low speed. I broke my GTR shaft a couple weeks ago, but to be fair, my skeg is so worn that it no longer provides adequate prop protection. I also towed in two PDs with busted gears in the same week. I'm sure you could bust a GDSD or MB also, but I don't think I've ever seen one during crawfish season.

You're right about the prop hitting stuff. I hit a rock with my prop that skinned down the side of the skeg, luckly I was only idleing or it would have been a bad day.

If you going to go slow GDLT 35 for sure, but I run my GT like I stole it and I get ware i need to be. They all break trust me it just depends on what you want to drive..........

It sure is nicer to hit a log with a motor that has a floating handle than one that is bolted/ welded to the frame. I no longer have shoulder problems since i sold my longtail and got my gtr.

Question is which are you running? Stumps or logs. I enjoy driving my GDSD over logs due to it being very easy to lift up. Stumps Im fine with because its a tough unit and I sometimes run through a pass cluttered with cypress knees and downed floating trees. WOT and it just kicks up. I could see where a PD would be easy in stumps cuz there is no long shaft sticking out. On logs, a reach is more desireable, IMO.

Robin explain how it would be hard on the motors with trim. You do understand that the motor floats on the trim right?

Been hitting stumps and crawling over logs all week with the pd, when I wasn't on here arguing with you assholes. It does just fine.

I hear what yall are saying, and I agree that every GTR and PD that I've seen is perfectly fine with stumps and logs. However, I also suspect (and agree) that he was intending to put more emphasis on the "balanced" aspect of the GDSD. I think what he was implying is that it comes up to clear the obstruction more gently then sets back down a little softer. For a boat that may not have the transom strength of a true mud boat, I can see how that might help.

Sorry, I kinda babbled cause I was trying to say it as objectively and non-confrontationally as possible so no one would feel butt hurt...

Let me just say that I hunt lakes that are nothing but stumps. I had a 35 gdsd and it beat the shit out of me. Everytime I hit something that damn handle would fly out of my hand and hit me on the side of my knee. By the end of duck season I had a huge bruise on the side of my leg not to mention the front pocket of my waders being ripped off.

I switched to a pd and have had zero problems.
