Earlier this summer I picked up a boat from Phowler. I already had a road trip planned from California to visit family Michigan. It just so happens that Iowa is right along the way. There is nothing like a vacation to see Yellowstone, Mount Rushmore, and to pick up a new boat. Phowler was good to work with during the ordering process and they made the boat exactly how I wanted.

I kept my 25 hp Mudbuddy longtail from my previous boat. Phowler cut the transom so that the longtail would fit, but with some good thinking on their part, they saved the cut-out for me if I ever want to change back to a high transom. The longtail swings in and out of the boat with no problem. I decided to get the commercial model because I hunt salt marshes and don't go out into open water. This boat seems huge to me compared to my previous 1448 jon. I probably would have gone with a 17' boat, but 16' is the most I could fit in my garage.

The longtail isn't a speed demon, but it quickly gets the boat up on plane with no problem. I hunt only about 4 miles from where I launch, so speed isn't my top concern. I like the spud poles so far and am glad I got that option. I went with pods because I had a positive experience with them on my last boat and like the way they reduce backsplash and lift the back end higher out of the water. The cut-out under the front deck is really handy for storing stuff. I went with the cut-out instead of the hatch so I could mount a seat on the front deck and still have room for mounting a blind.

I don't have a blind for it yet, but plan on building one in the next month. In the meantime, I'm having fun taking the dog out for training sessions.

Here are a few updated photos now that I have a blind on it. I ended up getting a Mudbuddy Shaggy blind. I had to bend a few pieces of new conduit to get the shape of the blind the way I wanted, but now I'm really happy with it.
