Post subject:  What kind of Battery??

Getting a slightly used beavertail 35, LT. My previous motors were a 8 and then 16 hp GD LT that had pull starts, so thats what i mainly used. Now that the new motor has no pull start i need to get a good battery. WHat do you guys have in your rigs? any suggestions? ALso not really looking to break the bank. Is there any brands/manufacturers to look for or the converse, stay away from??

Wal-Mart - has a yellow marine grade for under 100.00 - under 75 on sale...

I have run them for several years with no complaints....

Any deep cycle will get er done - helps to disconnect it in the offseason
as a MM on an aluminum hull leaches a battery even when everything is
off - a Perco makes a good disconnect.... I run twin batteries and run
all my lights from the second battery.... That way on a night fishing trip
the main battery stays hot.... Also if you have a bunch of lights these
motors can't keep up with voltage demands...

Thanks for the help. The only other drain i have on the battery are the bow and stern lights, and those are only on when the motor is running typically. Do you find that you need to hook up the battery to a trickle charger or some sort of charger to keep a good charge during the week or when you are not using the boat? or is the charging system on the motor good enough?

I use a 300 CCA garden tractor battery, but I don't run any lights. When you have 24 hours of daylight and only run rivers you don't need no stinken lights. The only draw I have is the GPS and depth finder. On a couple of long trips I've taken a spare battery as a back-up, but I've never needed it........yet. I like them because they are lighter and less expensive. Don't forget, these are just big lawnmower engines.

Get a battery at academy, if it goes out take it back and get a free one. They will take back anything

My wallmart battery is 7 years old when i got my 1st boat it came with it.It was under a foot of ice.We had to chip the ice away to get to the leads. I've ran it dead, swamped my boat where the battery was under water. It still works fine.Once a month i put a 2amp charger on it.The dam thing won't die.
