Post subject: | Boat recommendation??? Custom or production |
What's up fellas I got a question. I'm in the market for a boat and motor package. I live in east central Florida and want to get some opinions on what boat to pull the trigger on. Not a ton of mud in Florida but a bunch of thick vegetation both floating and submerged and some areas with scattered submerged stumps. Need to be able to turn good because most of the areas I hunt I'll have to run some trails. I'll also need to be able to carry a decent load 2-3 people, dog, plus gear(2-4 doz decoys, guns, etc) and be fairly fast. I'd also rather not get my teeth knocked out of my head and soaked when crossing some bigger water. Draft really isn't too big of an issue and neither is mud but it does need to run like an ape in the grass, lillies, hydrila, lettuce, and anything else that's green in the water. thanks |

gator trax has round chines and turn on a dime. Or find something else with a taper chine. Also get at least 21in sides and u will do ok in rough water. |

Get a custom boat. You won't be disappointed. Start with this site's sponsors. Talk to at least two of them before you pull the trigger. |

Are you planning on running the salt? If so, I might suggest running a horizontal based rig ( Gatortail or mud buddy ). I have a PD and run the salt frequently and wish I had a Gatortail. With the Gatortail, the engine sits more on top of the transom then the PD, which in turn gets less salt splash/ spray. Other than that, I am extremely happy with my rig. I usually hunt 2-3 guys and all the gear you mentioned. I have been running 22-23 mph in deep water in central Florida with a hunting load, and 27mph without a load in deep water. I have a 36 PD 1854 PD, with high transom and high sides, extended front deck. I have a few mods- bps muffler, bps cam, bored out carb, and performance air filter. |

Buy and air boat if cost is not an issue. If you need something cheaper get your boat custom built, but only use Louisiana builders. They have been in the business too long to get it wrong. |

Hey TS I hunt the same area as you. I went with uncle J custom built. I was on the fence with custom vs gator tail, gator trax etc. The only downside on a custom build is the wait time. Good luck. |

Florida is becoming a 'hot spot' for mudmotors. I know personally of several people in the last few weeks ordering custom rigs from FL. |
