Post subject: | Opinion For My Motor: I Own A 1548 G3 Hull |
There may be something already posted but I didn't pick up on it. Like everyone else I don't want to buy headaches.I've already decided I am not going with a Dixie motor or a MB. I am not needing high speed but do want to be on plane with 2 people and some equipment. This boat has a short transom, but everything else seems pretty good. Is this hull a decent hull canidate for this type of motor? Thanks for any input you can offer. |

I had a 1448 G3 with a 25 hp longtail. It would run about 15 mph with two guys, a dog, blind, decoys, and gear. I bet if you got a 27 hp shorttail, your boat would run fine with two guys. I also ran my boat with a 25 hp yamaha like yours and it hauled ass. So I think you should expect speeds significantly slower than that outboard you have, but as long as you go with a 27 hp mudmotor, you should move along fine. I wouldn't go much bigger than 27 hp, because weight is a concern on this size a boat. By the way, I ended up adding pods to my 1448 because the transom was lower than I liked with my 175 pound longtail. A shorttail is even heavier, so the transom on your boat may be lower than you like with a heavy motor. |

Completely flat bottom is better? I already sold the outboard but I guess I could sell the hull too. |

Completely flat, no runners, no v, and about 3 foot longer is better. |

Motor that was on the boat was ideal. You prob. Won't be satisfied with any sd motor on that boat. |

I have the same boat. Im running a 23hp Dixie on it. It does dam good a little more HP would be better thou. If i didnt get this boat for a great deal i would have got a real mud hull. I'm running 25 mph by myself and 22 with 2 people and a hunting load. No way to run 3 people thou. There really transom heavy boats. |

Thanks, I'm in no big hurry. I don't duck hunt, I just want it for some bad fishing spots. I can probably move this hull where I live and then find me a good deal on a mud hull. I appreciate all the input. |

That's the same hull I had when I got my 1st mm (27 MB mini). By myself, about 25-26 mph. With 2 guys & gear, 22-23 mph. With 3 guys & gear, sometimes couldn't even get on step. If you're going with a long tail, yeah it'll be fine. If you're looking at a surface drive, find ya another boat. |

kajun, a lot depends where you run and budget and how many you typically hunt. 'Tis true that a true flat bottom mud hull is the ticket for a shortail or for optimum running even with a longtail motor. I've been running a longtail since '86 because down here we have little water, hard bottom, no mud or beaver dams or submerged stumps. You may want to re-assess your needs. Some folks have bought mud motors but realized they could get to their areas in conventional outboards and went back to those. That is ideal for your hull. A longtail (23-25-27 HP) will work on that 1548 for a two man load, won't be fast but is reliable and and get from point A to B if you have relatively short runs, and it is more economical than any other motor. I started with a 1436/25 HP Evinrude, then a 1544/ 25 longtail, now a 1648/27 longtail...I'm looking for an 1848 mud hull w/ 35 longtail down the road so I can safely hunt with three on board. A 17-18' true flat mud hull with a shortail will get you a boat for all seasons and bigger water. I doubt there is anybody who gets it right the first time because we all morph to something else and there is no "one boat fits all marshes". Some guys shucked the shorty and bought blowboats and of course that is a big time investment, costly maintenance, pretty much single application vessel and motor. I would never get one, even if I could afford one because I don't care to hunt in waders and don't like the noise. On this forum a lot of guys run bayou marshes, beaver dams, endless mud flats, conditions that require heavy gauge mud hulls and lots of horses, that is why the prevalence of those suggestions. Bottom line, test drive them all! I will suggest you give Lamarr Cox in Melbourne a call, or Fast Duck motors in Deland. |

The bottom runners help turn the boat.....they do nothing for stability and with the hybrid rakes you can have a boat that cuts through the chop better in deep water..... sent by carrier pigeon...don't shoot it!!!! |
