Anyone have any good input on which 1654 boat would run and handle a load better between the gator trax and gator tail ?

Gator trax = round chine
Gator tail = square chine

Square chine will float more weight and get on step better than a round chine...given everything else equal. Round chine will turn better in deep water theoretically.

Is it a huge difference, maybe...only if you run a lot of deep water...they will both pop running shallow water.

YOu can also get the 16x54 in the extreme series also. THe Gator Trax is a good hull but it is very very heavy, where as the Gator Tail weighs less even in an extreme model

Takem, assuming they both had the same interior layout and beam width, how much lighter?

Man to be honest not real sure i just know when you grab the bow of a Gator trax you better have your big girl panties on. I can move Gator Tail boats with similar lay out around at the yard no problem.

This site has been just about everything except helpful to me while trying to learn more about mud boats so I buy the right one for my application

Post subject:  Re: Gator tail or gator trax

if both are laid out the same they are gonna carry a load pretty close same.

Post subject:  Re: Gator tail or gator trax

SO you don't consider this useful information? I don't know the exact weight comparison but i know for a fact you can get the same built boat, less the chine but in an extreme model for way less weight, and stand up to the same conditions. I can tell you this if you are gonna be in sticky situations i'd rather be in a GT cause those tanks (gator trax) ain't no bitch. They are heavy

Post subject:  Re: Gator tail or gator trax

Ya that's helpful just seems like every post has an ass in it so how much lighter is the extreme than the regular gator series roughly is the extreme well worth the extra?

Post subject:  Re: Gator tail or gator trax

flat will always carry a load better than rounded , if i were going 54 in my area i would look at the extreme but if making sharp turns isnt an issue i would stick to the true square .. yes the gator trax will turn better but your post was answered in my first 7 words

hope that helped

not trying to be an ass either , trust me when purchasing one of these boats you have to think long and hard to make the right decisions even after the fact you will still wonder if you made the right one ..

i think either way you go a gator boat be it trax or tail are equally great boats making your deciding factor square or round chines. but everytime the comparison is brought up the same things are said ... so im curious to know how a GatorTrax can be said to weigh so much more than a gatortail yet a gatortail is claimed to be stronger? most of the ones ive seen use the same aluminum and very similar brace structures... has anyone compared weights of exact same boats of each?

I have 1754hd gatortrax and when it was off the trailor in the yard i could push it around in my yard no problem.

both are great boats. What conditions will you be running in and how will you be using the boat? If you are wanting to know which one is the bestest, its all personal opinion.....both float. You can accessorize both boats to your prefrence. You can also go with a custom builder and get exactly what you want.... What motor will you be running? Any mods?

duck2 here some info from GTrax site

http://www.gatortraxboats.com/s-4-what- ... apart.aspx

everyone says Gtrax is heavier, but get the exact same style and layout from both builders and one is heavier then the other? not sure that makes sense to me.

thanks for the help i have been reading as much as possible i think the gator tail is going to be the best for me mostly fishing deep water some heavy lilly pads then just mud flats no sharp turns or stumps during duck season

I bought a 17' gatortrax boat I love it we run in deep water with it some and will turn easily. We also run in timber so we are on stumps and downed trees a lot and we haven't damaged the bottom of the boat at all. The boat is very heavy we are in the process of installing a winch on the front of it you can't pull the boat around. It is the only mud boat I have owned but I'm very happy with it.

They weigh more because people load them down with options. You can do the same thing to a gatortail hull or any other hull for that matter. For whatever reason, it doesn't seem to happen as much with other brands though. Maybe some are more likely to talk you out of too many options so that a stock motor will perform, where others are only in it for the buck and want to upsale every possible option and force you into a heavily modded motor?

4 of my friends run these Gator Trax, if you ask everyone of them they'll tell you its a heavy hull. They are all different sizes and have different accessories. On the other hand i have friends that run Gator Tail boats, they'll tell you that they are not so hard to manuver around. I've pushed these boats out of the mud, i've been around them to be able to compare the 2. Just personal experiences thats all i'm not trying to piss people off or give inaccurate information, just past experiences with the different hulls
