Post subject:  NEW Illowa Briggs 37 EFI E5BEFI Motor on Prowler 1850

It has been a long time coming but we finally got the final version of our New Illowa E5BEFI performance kit for the stock Briggs 37 EFI motor back from dyno testing and programming and put her on the water for load testing.

Background: We know some folks are putting parts on these Briggs EFI motors, running stock ECU, others using plug in programmers. We decided to go a different route. We took our E5 heads, exhaust and custom cam, dropped them into a new 37 EFI and took the motor to the dyno lab that actually designed the Briggs EFI system to have them tune the motor on the dyno and write the new program for the Delphi ECU to match our parts. We are pretty impressed with the results both on the water and on the dyno.

Test Engine: Briggs 37EFI with Illowa E5 Heads, Custom Cam and Exhaust.

Dyno Results:
Baseline Briggs engine, all stock 36.7 hp at 4800 RPM at Crank.
Our Engine with Stock Briggs Program and our performance parts 46 hp at 4800 RPM.
Our Engine after tuning program 48.8 hp at 4800 RPM.

Net Gain 13 Hp, Engine rating at dyno lab 50 HP at Crank +/- 1hp.

Water Testing Results:

Boat: 1850 Phowler Prowler with Barn Stormer Blind (Estimated Weight Boat with Blind 850, as loaded 925 before persons).
Gear 9 Gallon Fuel tank, Battery, safety gear.

Deep Water Speeds:
One Man 290 lbs 31.7 MPH @4600
Two Men 290 and 230 30 MPH @4600
Three Men 27 MPH @4500
Four Men 26.5 MPH (875 lbs) @ 4400

The motor runs flawlessly at all speeds, zero hesitation, great throttle response and very smooth.

The key to modifying these motors to be reliable is the custom programming of the ecu. Just slapping on parts the motor will run, but they will run very lean, we wanted a program that would maximize HP and ensure the exhaust gases would stay in the temp range that is safe for the engine. With the dyno program they developed the motor will be just as reliable as the stock motor. This is directly from the folks who developed this engine for Briggs.

We are very impressed with this new Illowa E5BEFI Kit and will be offering it soon for the customers we have had waiting for it to be finished, then we will offer to others with 37 EFI motors.

Real good to know the newer EFI motors can be "coaxed" to produce more. I have a 26.5 EFI Kohler LT, obviously this kind of expensive upgrade will not bring much improvement but still an option.
