 locked prop and logs/stumps
a couple of weekends ago i hit quite a few logs/stumps with my 25 gdlt and it tightened my prop down onto the rear jam nut. I heated the hub til red, and still couldn't get the prop to seperate from teh brass washer and the jam nut while using the prop removal tool from gd. I tried to turn the jam nut with a cressant and a cheater bar after using heat, and couldn't move it (it was backed to the end of the threads). I ended up having to cut the nut with the grinder until i was able to pry it away from the washer/prop. Anyway it got me to thinking about how to prevent the prop from locking down on the jam nut and brass washer when running stumps. I'm going to put a nylon or teflon washer between the brass washer and the prop to give the prop a little more cushion to keep it from locking down. Think it will work, or will i be wasting my time?

 Re: locked prop and logs/stumps
Id say its a waste of time. The impacts over time will end up cracking the plastic/teflon washer and it will likely dissapear. Some marine grade never seize will help. Also some say to leave the prop loose and don't tighten it up to the bushing.

 Re: locked prop and logs/stumps
Tighten the prop tight after putting nickel anti-seize. LPS makes some. Its not cheap but a little goes a long way. Make a habit of breaking it loose every 25 hrs or so and freshening it up. Get a 3 ft long piece of 3/16 flatbar and drill a 3/4" hole in it about 3" from the end to use as a prop removal tool. Ive never had a stuck prop again since using this method. I doubt its different on your motor but, on my 27 the prop actually thrusts into the top nut when running or if you hit something.

 Re: locked prop and logs/stumps
roger that. the prop was floating before my trip through the timber (as i launched the boat i heard the "clank" sound from the prop spinning down the shaft ). i usually take the prop off once every few months to reapply nickle anti-seize and i leave a little slack in the prop to "float". Today I bent a 12" cressant wrench that i used to stick in the u-joint while applying pressure with gd's prop removal tool and still couldn't budge it. after that, i removed the shaft and put it in a vise. the prop wasn't stuck on the shaft. It was just locked onto the nut behind the prop. The prop spun freely as soon as i relieved the pressure from the nut.
kibb - are you saying to tighten the prop against the nut behind the prop so that it doesn't float?

 Re: locked prop and logs/stumps
The forward jam nut. It should be forward jam nut, washer, tighten prop, washer, rear jam nut, lock washer, and nylock. Go devil suggests letting prop to float but when I spoke to them they said it was cause they believe it helps the prop not freeze on the shaft. That may be but I find it works better the way I explained. Just make sure its part of your preventative maintenance.
