Post Old Go-Devil needs a new motor
Hi noobie here with a simple question. I have an old 5hp GD (about 1992) short tail (crawdad) .
It's pure stock with a 5 Hp Briggs I/C motor.
Anyone know of a newer, maybe 8 hp+ motor, that will be a simple "bolt-up" to my existing frame?
{I sure would like an electric start!!}

did you look at any other brands of motors?

you might be able to get a motor from someone like harbor freight...

Post Re: Old Go-Devil needs a new motor
I bought the motor new (1992) from Warren C. at GD. It has served me well for 17 years as my primary flood water motor.
I originally had this 5hp (GD Crawdad 60 inch shaft) mated to a light 12' Crawdad boat (old style, not the one with the twin-like hulls). The reason for such a small rig was I needed a boat & motor to haul in a pick-up truck and launch in flooded waters by myself. It was perfect for 1 man travel in flooded forest near the main river. Averaged about 12mph , with no weight but me in boat. Anyways, I got rid of the old plastic boat and got a deal on an aluminum 14'-36" . Now the (5hp) is just not enough to push the new boat beyond bearable, and the motor is getting tired too. (So am I!)
I had spoken to GD years ago and they said that maybe an 8hp Briggs w/electric would be a mate for the GD frame, but it would surely be heavier.
Big decision is to maybe up the Horsepower on that old GD frame, get float pods from , and see if I pick up speed and stay maneuverable in very tight backwaters.

Ehh slap a 35 on 'er and make the ol' lady sit on the bow. I've found that the wife makes a pretty good windshield.

We put a 18hp Van on a GD 58" frame last year and everything lined up. 9Hp Briggs had the same base bolt pattern and motor face pattern as 18Hp just had to replace prop to a 9x5.
