 1648 w/ 35hp BackH20 speeds?
I just picked up a new 1648 jon boat, and now I am looking into getting a 35hp Backh20 longtail. I was just wondering what kind of speeds I could expect.
This will be a big jump in size and speed from my boat last year, it was a 1432 with a 13hp.

Is it a flat bottom , if so 24-26 mph maybe .

Its just a standard 1648 jon with the ribs not a full flat bottom, I am still saving my money for a true flat mud boat.

I'm pretty familiar with that set up! You'll run 25-26 all day.

 Re: 1648 w/ 35hp BackH20 speeds?
It will be a very small different in a ribbed vs smooth flat bottom I don't honestly think it would be a noticeable difference speed-wise. I believe Huck was referring to V bottom vs flat...
For what it's worth, my 1548 has a very small amount of V all the way back and even with only 20hp, will still bump 20mph. I don't think it hurts speed with a Longtail like it does a surface drive.

Stu I'm a couple biscuits over 3 bills and with me and push pole, trolling motor, etc, I can hit 25.

 Re: 1648 w/ 35hp BackH20 speeds?
Right now I'm running 1752 with a Swomp 35 2-3 adults cooler and whatnot averages about 22 mph. Sometimes faster sometimes slower. That said, I bought this rig to run tight shallow spots where I don't want destroy an outboard in the Midwest. It was purchased with duck hunting and bow fishing in mind, but just running around and exploring as well as racing around rivers is as much fun as anything. I looked at surface drives and while reverse is awesome and going 30mph plus would be cool on open stretches, I rarely can run wide open for very long or I'd be stuck on shore or in a tree. If I can run wide open for more than a few minutes I'm usually in a place where an outboard would be fine. What I like about the Swomp is the ease of use, the service from backwater, there are a ton of little features, improvements and innovations on an old concept. lastly it's smooth and can be run all day and doesn't require a Popeye armed death grip. So if you are in a place with the mud for a surface drive and you must hit 30mph get one. If you must be fastest boat on the river/swamp go to Thailand and get a two stroke, a plywood skiff and a ladyboy mechanic to work on it and remember your kill switch! On small to medium winding rivers it's all I can do to keep from losing control or powersliding doing anything over 20mph. If anyone ever wants to go for a ride and pay for boat and dental repairs I'll take them out and pin the throttle al a Freddy king and see if 22 mph is fast enough for you. There's plenty of power and a little speed in reserve most places I go around here. I get that where you live may be much different. Here I deal mostly with rocks, logs vegetation and some gravel. Most of the mud is thick rotting vegetation we call loon s#%* more so than the silty muck that's in southern states.

 Re: 1648 w/ 35hp BackH20 speeds?
Most of the stock surface drives are running around 26 with a load so the difference between 22 and 26 shouldn't matter unless you're drag racing. I'm in the Midwest as well and while I'll probably buy a surface drive when I have the money, it's totally unnecessary

 Re: 1648 w/ 35hp BackH20 speeds?
Great speed, 45th parallel! I bet that 1752 is heavy too. Most of the big block surface drives on those heavy hulls need modding to run in the mid-20's with a hunting load, so you are doing real good. I'm waiting to see how stu does with his mud hull and the swomp 35. I run a 1648 w/27 MB LT and when I am by myself hunting I top out at 20 mph and that is fast enough- would be great to run 20 with two hunters or more and gear though. Down here the water is low and no real mud to speak of and the longtail shines as well. I don't really want a shortie, they become a liability in the shallow and more maintenance and cost to boot. stu, I am waiting on that ride! I just read that teal season is probably going to be nine days and 6 teal/ day too (sep.20-28), that will be a treat!
