What is the best brand of big longtail?
I am looking to buy a 25hp or bigger longtail for a 1648 and wondered if there was much difference in quality or ease of operation. I found a beavertail 27hp at a decent price, are these as good a motor as the go-devil? I am pretty new to the mud motors and there is nobody running one in my area to ask. Thanks!

I'd go with go devil since they been in business since 1977.

If the price is right - jump on it...
We see mostly GoDevil here in Texas but a guy on our duck lease had a BT boat and BT longtail that he really loved....
The beauty of the longtail is, there is very little to go wrong mechanically cause they are so simple.... If its a Kohler 27, that is as tough a motor as you could ask for...

I've have a 25 hp godevil and that thing is a work horse. The only things I would check is to find out if it has been run in salt water for periods of time and if it smokes alot. Other than that parts are pretty cheap, and if you find one with the right price jump on it.

Re: What is the best brand of big longtail?
I think the Go-Devil is more popular down South, the Beavertail seen more up North. Makes some sense by the geographical region they originate in {ie Beavertail=MN , GD= LA}, and maybe the shipping cost. Anyways, they both are good set-ups. If I had to order one NEW I would choose the GO-Devil, cause of the long time service I've been very happy with (about 17 years so far). IF the Beavertail 27hp is close to your home, then that might make shipping easier? IF the Beavertail is USED then make sure it has been maintained well. Some guys don't bother with lubrication and it will show if it hasn't been taken care of.
