Post 18 hp Vanguard go-devil 6.8 MPH?????
Just ran my set-up for the first time. Very disappointed Tracker 16" transom, 16x48, me 250 lbs, dog 100lbs, nothing more GPS speed of 6.8 MPH. Motor at 1/2 or wide open, same speed. Any ideas????? If I lift the prop out, RPMS up, put in water and she stalls out. I was expecting more...

what are the rpms in the water, out of the water. stalling out as in motor dying? i had a 6.5 beavertail, that would run fine out of the water, the instant i put it under a load it would bogg down and die. come to find out there wasn't enough oil . the oil read fine on the dip stick, but the angle of the shaft and transome hit the low oil cut off. dont know if this will help or not,

bull

I don't have an RPM gauge on the unit.

The motor was used and bought at a DNR auction. The prop seems to measure out fine, but I am not an expert on those. Any prop info would be helpful. I replaced plugs, oil, filter, air cleaner, and fuel filter. I will check the governor spring etc.

Could be a governor issue. Looks like spring is not tight, Best way to adjust this????

Sounds to me like it could be a caborator issue, or water in fuel.

Fuel is fine it is non-ethanol. Just took it out again today! 4.3 MPH up river MAX. This thing has one speed in the water and thats it, no throttle whatsoever. If you lift it out of the water, responsive throttle no shaking. Put it in the water bogs, shakes like a jackhammer, no throttle - one speed 1/4, 1/2 or max throttle.

my bud was having that problem with his Honda 20....he changed oil, spark plugs, cleaned the carb, and now only runs premium gas....it runs like a top now...
but I read where you've already done that....other than prop I don't know what it could be

Dead cylinder....

Try removing one spark plug wire at a time - engine running - bet it is only running on one cylinder....

Try what gigafowl said.

I had the same thing happen to me on a 23hp. come to find out the compression was bad. rpm would be around 4600 out of the water, but under water at full throttle they would be 2300. Try a compression test and that should be able to tell you.

I had this problem couple months ago. My compression was good. The problem was in the carb. Took carb apart cleaned it completely and found some crap behind one of the jets. All better. But I would start by checking compression that is easy to do. If you do not have a tester you can pull the plugs and cover the plug hole with your thumb, both cylinders should blow your thumb off the hole. If you can hold the pressure and your thumb doesn't move, well thats bad. (this is not the best way of checking compression and I would recommend you get a tester but this is quick and give you a good ideal.) But if you have good Compression check the carb. More than likely its the carb. Just MHO. Good Luck

Will be checking the compression today. I have been told that I should look for anything from 90-125LBS and hopefully the cylinders are close to one another. Below 75lbs is bad????? Will move to cleaning up the carb at that point - hope thats it!

OK GIGAFOWL was RIGHT!!!! Dead cylinder. Traced it to a bad coil, bought part and will be replacing tomorrow. I am pissed it took me this long to figure out, but the engine never sounded like it was missing. Good to know you can run on one cylinder if you need to.

Not a bad coil.... Its the diode wire that goes between the coils and the stop ground. Anybody else have issue with this? Ordered from Go-devil today along with a rock guard and new muffler.
