Post Swapping a Lifan 6.5 longtail motor with a predator 13hp?
Some of you know I just picked up the Lifan 6.5 longtail mud motor for my classic gheenoe.

Not this season but maybe next spring I may want to do a motor swap... As in buy one of the predators (13hp) from Harbor frieght and change it out with this Lifan I'm currently running?

How much would go into it besides buying a new motor, new prop... Because the u joints would still be used and the driveshaft right? How hard would it be, very time consuming or pretty easy?

Also, what are the cheapest/easiest things to do to these Lifan motors to get a little horsepower out of them... its extremely slow right now, if I could get a few more hp I could probably get it on plane.

Someone told me new prop, another said a new carb.? can someone point me in the right direction? maybe even a link or website to the exact product. Thanks, I'm new to these motors and want to learn as much as I can! :?

I know somebody posted a link to a go kart website.
He turned a 6hp to a 20? Vaguely remember....
Probably your best bet to mod up your motor.

Here's the link. You can easily mod a 6.5 to make over 10hp with some simple and cheap mods (intake, exhaust, carb rejet) and with some money you can make nearly 20.

They have anything and everything for the 6.5s and a few other motors.

Well Im actually in the same boat. I have a 9hp Honda GDLT pushing a 1436 boat and was looking for upgrades for a little extra power. I called NR racing and he suggested started out with the stage 1 "hop-up" kit. It comes with an air intake, valve springs, rejet kit and a few other small things and is relatively cheap. He said this would be the most reliable thing for a mud motor. I don't know exactly though since this does raise the RPMS which will lower the life of a motor.

If you do a Google search on "6.5 engine mods" you will find endless info from people who race go-karts.

But in the end I really dont know if adding a few hp to a mud motor will increase the speed at all (without changing the prop), but it will more than likely give you a lilttle more torque to get up to speed quicker. If anyone else has any input I would be interested too.. Thanks

The stage 1 kit should be pretty easy to install yourself. Im not sure if it comes with any sort of directions or not. The hardest thing to do would be installing the heavier valve springs but all you have to do is pop the cover off (which takes about 10 seconds) and change the springs and check the clearance with a feeler gauge. These motors are pretty simple so I would assume taking them apart isn't too difficult.

My motor pushes me fine but when I get another person and gear in the boat it really slows down. Maybe its because I had a 25 outboard on it so I'm used to it going 25 - 30mph (probably wasn't safe anyways). Im pretty happy with it though, its more beneficial for me to have a mud motor than it is to go fast and possibly ruin another outboard.
