I have a 23hp long tail go devil and have some rpm problems. i have twin 23's and while runing out of the water the rpms at full throttle is around 3400 to 3500 on both. when i put the boat in the water one of the engines at full throttle is at 2400 while the other is at 3500. Any ideas on whats happening here? changed the oil and spark plugs and didn't help. engine with the rpm problem also blows white smoke sometimes.

Sounds like a dead cylinder...

Run the boat on just the problem engine - bet it dies when you pull one of the plug wires off... That will be the good cylinder...

Run compression test on other cylinder to see if it is mechanical...

If good compression is observed it is electrical...

Try the plug wire thing, or see what cylinder head is cold after it runs. Once you figure out the bad guy....you are on your way.

I had a 23 that did the same thing, changed plugs, coils, fuel lines, gas and all that. The compression checked out ok as well. I thought the carb was really clean. However, when I took the carb off, and soaked it in acetone or carb cleaner for a few hours it worked just dandy after that. Be careful not to let any of the neoprene or plastic that may be on the carb come into contact with the cleaner.

Good luck, and don't forget to put a good inline fuel filter on there when you get it running again.

I had a similiar issue with the 23 GDLT I had and it was a bad headgasket. What readings are you getting on the compression test, also how did the spark plug look on the bad cyl? Was the gap closed up, like it had made contact?

Compression is about 50lbs lower than what it should. spark plugs looked good, nice gap between, not sure what to do.the other engine is brand new. lookin real hard at them surfave drives.
