Post what's the best combo.
Say, If you had a 35hp longtail what type of haul would be the best fit or performance. What size specifications. I would be hauling a 13 foot duck skiff, guns, dog, 4 bags of decoys, and up to 3 people. My friend puts all this in a 16ft mirrocraft mod V. It goes pretty good, but wondering if a true flat would be better.

So like a 17 foot 57" wide wouldn't be a good fit? with .125 bottom

Interesting. I was surprised how well my friends boat went. We scooted right along. my only disappointment was the lack of room. We could barely get the dog in with everything. You loose a lot in the back though I think with a long tail.

Go with a longer boat for reason mentioned above but also if your hauling a 13' duckskiff then your gonna be cramped with the long handle. I haul a 12' pirogue in my 17' and any longer would be a real pain in the ass as far a space.

2044 or somewhere in there is what I'd shop for.

So would a company like phowler be able to make a nice performing boat to match the 35hp longtail. Like a 18x48. I don't want to long of a boat it won't fit in the garage. Of course then I would have to excuse to build a bigger garage :D

Sell the longtail and get a surface drive.

I agree. even the boat I have now is very open. I carry my skiff just fine with my current boat and I don't see me changing anytime soon, but my buddy and I always some time in the year talking about the advantages and disadvantages on short versus long tails. It fun and now that duck hunting is done here in Wisconsin I need something to occupy my time. :D

I'll have to try a post a pic of what I use currently. I actuall really like it, but like mentioned before there are some benefits to a long tail.

Post Re: what's the best combo.
Great question. I still run a longtail and don't think I will ever run a shortail because of where I run. I don't carry heavy loads and I don't need a heavy boat but I do have and want an open boat, presently have a 1648 but I think an 1848 will be optimum- maybe even with a 27 HP LT- might seem underpowered but lots of horses can't overcome shallow hard bottom, sand/marl/coral rock that will shred a prop quickly and forget about reverse or winches. I don't care too much about speed, 20 mph feels like flying to me, and I don't have to compete like in so many other areas. Besides, the big horse runners end up pulling up too soon and scooting around all morning making noise and ruining hunts. On another post Uncle J kind of laughed about making one out of .090, but I can settle for .100 but I want flotation- that does not weigh much and yeah I've heard all the arguments about freeing up more space and insurance but I'd like the flotation insurance. A couple guys here bought GD hulls and both sold them because of the weight.

muddyriver,I think the Phowler 1848 hull looks promising. The posted price is competitive with the others- man, alum has gotten expensive! I wish I'd saved all the cans I've used in the last decade. Both backh20 and MB (SLT) have what I consider the newer paradigm in LT's. We both know that LT's are still viable in some marshes. Let us know what you get.
