Post Setup Help
Please be patient as this is my first Mud Motor...

I have a War Eagle 236; 12' welded mod-v, about 250lbs, 16.25" transom with a Beavertail 13hp Honda (GX390). It seems incredibly sluggish. I would have expected that setup to get up on plane with only me and a bag of decoys.

Motor runs well so I dont believe its mechanical, seems like more of a setup issue. Doesnt bog, pushes strong through about 10-12" of water with frozen mud underneith. I have tried several different running depths, put all the weight in the front, nothing helps.

The motor is a 70" shaft with a 8x4 prop?- assuming i measured correctly (8" = total diameter, across 2 blades).

On a side note if the bump stop isnt set at the right height I constantly have to apply pressure to the handle to lift the tail of the motor towards the surface when cruising in open water- when I bought the boat i was told the opposite, that he had to constantly pull up and "dig the motor into the water"

RPM and GPS speed info would be helpful in figuring out your issues.

Angle of the dangle. Most longtails run best on a 16 inch transom. I do believe the are a few that will work on a 18-20 inch transom.

Get GPS speed and rpms as stated above

Thanks for the replies, I'll work on some gps info, right now our ramps are pretty well froze up. Might be a spring time project unless we get a warm spell...

That war eagle is prolly pretty heavy huh? A short heavy boat with that 13hp is a recipe for a turd.

I had a 13 on a 14x42 and it would plane with me and a bag of decoys, add a second pretty good sized friend and you could forget about it.

Not too bad really ... the specs list it at 200lbs, with the blind and essential gear; 10lb anchor, blind bag, gun etc... I can lift either end up off the trailer bunks or when sitting on land after the tide goes out

Reviving a really old thread here... Took it out w tach and GPS today. I was getting about 6.5 mph loaded (475-500lbs). Unloaded the boat and only got up to 7.3mph with just me (200lb). Runs right up to 3600 rpm. if I hold down on the throttle lever it will bounce around up near 3800- this is where I recorded my max speeds.

I played with the bump stop and actually it seemed that the prop riding lower was better than up close to the surface.

If you are keeping the boat, I would recommend cutting down the transom (for the motor mounting only) to 16-17" and improving the angle. Proper planing depth after that can be adjusted by bending the cavitation plate up/down in 1/4" increments until you get it right.

Now I'm totally confused, or maybe I have been all along...

Anyway I just put a the measure on my transom and it's 16.25“ tall. This eases worries about having to cut up my boat but what the heck is going on my my 7mph max speed?

What condition is your prop in?

Prop is in good shape... Just took a few pics and noticed that the cavitation plate is pointed down/forward of the hull. Should this be level with the bottom of the hull?

The angle of the cav plate looks fine to me. You can try adjusting the trail edge downward some to help force your prop up to the surface. May help a little but not significantly.

What about the depth of the prop? does that seem about correct or do they typically run deeper? Sorry for the ignorance this is my first MM. I know it would be much easier to go try these things out but getting out to the water during the week is impossible so I'm trying to make a list of things to try next time I am out.

You should be able to see the cav plate running just below the surface. But it shouldn't want to easily pop out on you. You should be able to run the motor with one hand comfortably apply very little up ward or downward pressure.

Post Re: Setup Help
Since my last post I have added beavertail pods and adjusted the stop all the way in to allow myself the ability to try different running depths.

I now run at the same 7 mph with my blind, dog and gear. Haven't torn it all apart to test without the extra weight.

The motor will always dive to the lowest possible depth and seems to get the best performance at about 75% down (well under the surface) if I bring it up closer 10-12" under the surface I loose a slight amount of speed .2-.5 mph.

I think I should get 12-14 mph out of this rig. Am I dreaming or does everyone else think that somthing is wrong?

Post Re: Setup Help
During the past 4 months of snow I have decided that I need a re-power for spring.

I am between the two ideas of 1) adding a NR Racing stage 2/3 hop up kit or 2) replacing with a predator 22 hp v-twin.

Currently leaning towards a hop up kit on the gx390 for two reasons- I can get close to the same hp without adding 60 lbs of additional weight. Either option will require a prop upgrade.

Anyone used one of these NRR kits? How is the durability? Is there a huge advantage to going to a vtwin? Worth the added weight on a small boat?

Honestly you are wasting your money modding that motor before you get the transom/cav plate issues resolved. Running a foot under water is way too deep.

You could spend a little cash getting your prop/cav plate right. Or you you could spend considerably more buying more Hp and potentially building something that's going to come apart at the worst possible moment.. And ended up running the same speeds. Which one makes more sense?

Post Re: Setup Help
Against others advice, I tore the motor down to a bare block and installed the stage 3 kit from NR Racing: Air filter, timing key, carb, exhaust, muffler, cam, billet rod, reinforced rockers, heavy valve springs and finished it with a 9x6 prop. Also replaced the starter while I was at it- no more tugging on the pull cord to start it!

With me and the dog I'm running 17mph, in as little as 8-10" which is respectable, in my book anyway, for a small boat/motor combo. Cav plate rides right at the surface or even a hair above but I think that's me keeping the RPMS up due to the prop size.

I wanted a 9x5 prop but was talked into a 9x6. I still think it's a little too much as I can only turn about 4200-4500 rpm (prop in the water) where the cam is set to run 5200-5500. Being that I can achieve good speed and it really digs in the mud, I'm not all that upset about over propping it, in retrospect it's acctually keeping the RPM down closer to factory and hopefully extending the life a little bit.

With the stronger internal parts and lower than anticipated RPM I have very little concern about reliability. Although i only have a couple hours logged it already sounds and "feels" like a much more durable engine. I feel a lot more confident taking it out on the water than I did with the stock engine.
