I recently purchased a 1995 TDB 14' Classic in mint condition. It came with a 1995 9.9HP Johnson O/B, also mint, but less than the boat's max rating of 15 HP. Planning to use my 6.5 HP GDLT on it for hunting our duck club marsh - just enough for displacement hull speed probabaly, say 6 mph, which is fine for use there. Wondering about using my 16 HP GDLT on it to get more speed on open water when using the TDB as a tender boat for diver hunting from a layout. Anybody try using a 16 HP or larger longtail on a TDB 14'? I have only found one report online, which said a 18HP B&S on a longtail was too heavy for the narrowed stern on the Classic.

You would be a lot better with that 9.9 outboard on open water than the longtail

I agree except that when the lake is lowered in the fall I only have 6" depth near shore and getting to/from my dock. That's why I bought my GDLTs. I am thinking of adding an electric trolling motor for moving around the decoys and layout boat.

I guess my other option would be to keep the Johnson on the TDB and use the electric to get to/from the dock.

Or walk it out....how far is it to deeper water ?

About 100yards of boot sucking, sink to your chin or worse, ooze, with weeds so thick they stall anything except a MM (or maybe a trolling motor)

How big of water is this on also? I would hate to be on a big lake and have some waves blow up and be trying to pick up strings of divers and a layout boat with a troller. Would definitely suck trying to do that kind of maneuvering with a long tail also. Could you get a decent push pole? As long as the boat is floating it wouldn't take much to pole 100 yds to deeper water

Lake is around a mile wide from outer shoreline to island in centre of lake, and length is about 7 miles running SW to NE.
I think I would rather row 100yd than try poling.

Longtail where you gotta go and push pole around the decoys, that's how I do it.
