 longtail on canoeI am wanting to get a small longtail for my 18' flatback canoe and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on a good kit, motor, size and tips on running a mud motor in a canoe. i have a big boat with a surface drive and i just need something to run my river when its way low

Re: longtail on canoe Kinda sounds sketchy , but it's your call. If your interested check out the glider kits from backwater. , you could use a small hp motor .

Re: longtail on canoe This is probably the only time I wouldn't recommend a backwater motor...

Re: longtail on canoe Unless your canoe is 4' wide at the stern do not attempt! You will roll it over on a slow turn. If your canoe is shaped like a gheenoe then you will be fine.

Re: longtail on canoe You'll be fine if its like a grumman workhorse fallback canoe. We had a guy put a 7hp on his and was getting 15mph out of it. But that canoe is a "trapper" style canoe rated for 1000lbs. so it drafted very little. This guy was no small fella to say the least, he was topping 350-400lbs. He used it for setting fishing jugs, just don't get aggressive with it in the turns and keep it balance on weight. You should be fine as long as you practice with it and wear your life vest.

Re: longtail on canoe well I guess I will go ahead and try a 6.5hp. I have built a few bigger rigs for my medium sized boats but just wanted a feel for who has ran a mm on a canoe. sounds like my canoe might be a little small but we shall see if I flip it more times then not ha

Re: longtail on canoe As said above it depends on motor weight, ttransom width and hull shape. I run a 6.5 hp Go-Devil, 109lb., on a 15'4" Gheenoe hi-sider and it is stable. However if it was a round-bottomed typical canoe hull I would not go above 60lb, maybe just a very light MM.
