Post Backwater 35 lite
Any reviews? Just saw an ad for this motor; their website does not list it though. Just asking what are the pros/cons on the 23 lite versus 23 "regular"( both the 59" and 72" drives), the weight difference is only 15#; I am assuming negligible difference in the 35 lite versus 35 regular. What would be the gain of not having an U-joint?? Logic tells me a little more output/torque...

Post Re: Backwater 35 lite
Few guys at the SETX Mud Run got to run the new frame. I'll have my 37 Lite in September. I am waiting til then to pick it up on my way back from Canada. I'm ready!

Put simply, doing away with the u joint puts more power to the prop. Every time there is a change of direction with energy, like the 10-15 degrees of change that you have with a u joint, you lose power. The new frame will also have a larger driveshaft and driveshaft housing. I believe the new frame will also come standard with a hex prop.

Thank you! Do you suppose you will be able to run a slightly larger prop? Anyway, the next question might be is this the new generation of platform/frame? Like the idea of a hex prop, probably less binding issues with that, and from the mfg. standpoint easier to mate the shaft to motor probably, will await the field trials! Keep us posted!

Yes , hex shaft, no more threaded props, those are actually available for any backwater frame, small block23 as well, I've used the hex props and shaft over a year now. The 35 swomp lite will either come stock 10x5 or 10x 6 for the prop.

I need one on my 1638 godevil. Heck it weighs less than a 23gdsd so it should work

I agree! Notice on the BW website that the 23 lite has both a 65" and 77" shaft; wonder if the 35/37 lite will offer similar or is the SS 59" length no longer viable with the lite configuration? Because of the no U-joint/angle, figure the longer length will be needed?

219lbs. I might just have to sell my whole rig and just go ahead and buy that 1644 gatortrax with a 35 on the back. Be a hell of a rig

The lite frame Arlon brought to caddo was a running SOB, he was faster than me. When I drove ,with he and I in his rig we were running 28 on my gps( garmin) . Handled well. The rig he brought to setx , wasnt dialed in correctly ( cav plate tracking to deep ) but was still running 26+.

I got some run time in a Arlon's boat too. Thing ran well. If I ever go back to any sort of longtail setup that's definitely what it's going to be.

Thanks, Frank, for posting the ad! I will learn how to post a pic sometime this decade if my wife helps me out. Hope all goes well with the new frame/shaft combo! I am sneaking out this a.m. to run my motor, hope I can run an LT for another decade at least.

This past week there was a for sale ad with pics of a MB SLT 35 HP...Huck, have you ever seen one run at the Caddo run?? The price has always been prohibitive to me and many others I am sure, just wanted your input on that motor. Would be cool to see a BW lite 37 efi vs. SLT 37 efi!

Post Re: Backwater 35 lite
I drove a 35slt when they first came out on a 1644 gatortrax. To me it was very easy to run and the neutral was awesome. If they made a 23hp one id buy it. I hunt alone alot of times and i like having that backup pull start. Ive driven all three brands. I like the throttle location on the godevil better along with the handle setup but like the rest of the backwater. My godevil will ride easy as pie sitting down in the river but the backwater is easier to turn to me. My old 27mblt would fight the piss out of you but it would push a load great. If i had had the opportunity to drive a BW a year ago when i bought my GD, id have bought one instead. However i have a GD dealer 30min from me so i went that route. When my GD frame needs a rebuild, ill prob order a swomp lite frame and swap motors.

I'd also like to see how that big block lite would perform on a true flat hull, and not necessarily a GD, maybe a lighter weight 1844 or phowler 1844/1848. From the pics I've seen it seems to be an alwed 1752 ribbed model. How do I convince the missus I need another duck boat?

I put a little stick time on the very rig Arlon is standing in. I can tell ya, a ribbed bottom isn't at all a hindrance on that thing. I couldn't shake him in my 1860/37SD. The thing flat moves.

Ok guys, it is September, currently teal season here, but I am shut out because of the storm/high water closures of most of the wma's here, including the glades. NO Backwater lite reviews yet?? How come BW website is not featuring them? I am assuming not enough inventory? What gives? Would love to retrofit my swomp 26.5 with the the lite frame!! Minnesota is a long drive though.

I haven't even hooked my fuel line up and filled the motor with oil yet. I've been slammed with work and been playing catch up from being out of the office last week. Saturday will be the day I put the rig in the water and she what she's all about. The motor definitely passes the eye test. The build quality and craftsmanship is at the same level you'd expect from Backwater. The frame is beefier than the 23 Lite frame for sure. The bell housing and the lower bearing housing are much bigger than they are on the 23. They have to be to accommodate the 7/8" driveshaft. The engine block has a skid plate that covers the entire bottom of the engine block and a portion of the side of the block as well. I'm anxious to fire the motor up and see just how smooth it runs.

Backwater is a family owned company and the daily operations are ran by just a few people. And right now they're slammed. Multiple motors are being shipped daily and I know Jake has had some long nights lately. The website will be updated with information on the new frame soon. And like everything else about Backwater, when they do it, it'll be done right.

Be looking for a review from me soon!

Frank, thanks for the reply! I've been itching to get out but like I said, storm closures have kept me landlocked! Actually, I would have gotten stuck out there in the marsh as I found out my battery is kaput yesterday. Glad to hear the BW boys are working hard and that means remuneration for them and that is good...just hope they find time to fish/duck hunt now and then. Is your teal season still on? I am hoping for a reopening this coming weekend but that is probably wishful thinking.
Huck, thanks for the positive trials, were all of them 35/37's or have they tried the drive on a 26.5 Kohler??

Wow! >than 37 HP?? I love my 26.5 efi, but sure would like some more horses/oomf, especially if I go and get that dream light hull 1844/1848! Anyway, I will try and be patient and wait for Frank's review, seeing as how he's been finally convinced to make the run on Saturday.
