I am making do with a 1648 but would love an 1844/1848 "light" true flat hull...but of course I have a 26.5 efi swomp. If you are carrying 2-3 hunters and gear on that hull I would say a 26.5/27 HP as the minimum. The 35/37 HP swomp is only another 40# and will carry that hull a lot better. BW will be introducing soon their 35/37 stock and efi lite motors, you should consider one of those. Will you be getting a short transom 1844? All-welded? What gauge?
Sorry to digress, but the 23 Briggs is a fine powerplant and you can mod it and such but with that hull I would opt for the big block. :geek:

Spent a little time in a 1744 with a BW35 lite last weekend. Solid power and load toater. If it was a 23 with less power i would have been disappointed on that boat. Yes the bigblock feels a little heavier but worth every bit to be able to carry whatever you want

Go as big as you can afford.

I have an 18x44. Get a 35. You won't be disappointed. When I was trying to decide what size motor to put on my hull my buddy told me to ask myself this: Have you ever been driving a boat and said damn, I wish I didn't have all of this horsepower?

Running a 17-52 with a 35, I'd go 37 EFI or 90hp of they offered it. What you're proposing will scoot solo, but will bog down quick. If you're trying to save money by going with less horsepower, do yourself a favor and save a bit longer for what you'll inevitably buy and you'll be money ahead.
If your're in MN, I'm on the North side of the cities and you're welcome to try mine.

My buddy used to run that setup. It was faster than my 25 gd on the exact same boat. 35 would b better but the 23 did the job just fine.

I ran a 23GDLT on a GD 1844 round chine for a couple years 14-18mph depending on load.
