Post 1848 Jon boat
hello from Cali. I am in the market for an 1848 Jon boat and I think I’m going to pair it with the 27hp Kohler engine and an sps swamp runner kit. The problem is that the only 1848 I can find out here is made by alumacraft and has a 20” transom. My only other option would be to have an 1848 weld-craft shipped out here and pay shipping or drive to get it. Anybody know something I don’t know. Also how do y’all think it will perform. My medium kit from them on a 1436 has been great, but I’m ready for bigger and more power. Thanks

How heavy are you going to be running usually? Always loaded or often lighter? If you're going to max that boat out regularly you may want a larger motor, but if not you'll likely be happy.

Does Alumacraft not make a 16 inch transom? Have to be losing some market like that. Find a used boat with a 16 inch transom or cut that Alumacraft one down. I wouldn't try to make the Swamp Runner work on a 20 inch transom.

My heaviest loads will probably be like 800lbs but more regularly 600lbs. Alumacraft does not offer 16” transom, but they are cheapest and easiest for me to get. I could always cut the transom down I guess. The .070 thickness slightly concerns me but I usually only run in sandy bottom, the only obstacles are the underwater trees or logs.

I have friends who have run .072 gauge Lowe jons with longtails for several decades with no major problems...cutting down the transom will work good- you can "beef" up the transom with an additional alum plate to stiffen it up...gatorglide or steelflex on the bottom of the hull is another good investment.

That’s good news!! So it’s lookong like the alumacraft and cut down the transom. Then I can just take a price of aluminum and bend it over top and rivet in place. Then hit it with a spray bomb. Give it a factory look. That sounds much cheaper than ordering a boat and getting shipped over 1200 miles lol

I bet it's not that expensive to get a boat shipped there. Check with alweld and xpress to see, and see if there's a lowe or tracker or gatortrax that fits your needs before settling. Lowe is sold at cabelas, tracker and gatortrax are sold by basspro. After checking those out, if you still want your alumacraft, then at least you know it wasn't because you didn't check other options.

I was stuffing around 1500 pounds total weight in my boat, counting motor, gas, people, rifles, gear...if you're total weight will not likely exceed 800 you may be just fine with that 27. I don't go out in waves with that load, did once and it was a miracle we didn't take more water over the side then we did.

Make sure you exhaust the other sources for new boats, check what it would cost to ship a boat with a 16 inch transom and double check the sporting good stores, they may have what you need.

If you exhaust the new boats and can't find a used one, cut the transom.

And just to double check, a mod v should be out of the question because long tails don’t do well with them correct?

Used to be more 1848 jons sold by different mfg.'s in riveted/short transom format available- sorry I did not get one back when I got my 2004 1648 grizzly .100 all-welded. The grizzly is around 400# and actually overkill for these parts where I have very little mud, hard sand/marl bottom- my 26.5 EFI Backwater LT does the job, albeit it is a compromise with the hull, could use a true flat. Used to be the 1848 riveted was just under 400#, and for years there were few all-welded models. With the advent of the heavy block SD's guess it became essential to get a heavier gauge hull- and a true flat thick bottom to traverse all those stump-infested environs. That 27 sps will be minimal HP to push that 1848 light or heavy load- you probably should spend the $ and get something that can handle the inevitable upgrade (heavy SD or perhaps a 35 LT?). What kinds of hulls are used in your area? That should probably be the better indication of what to get.

Just out of curiosity... what speeds are you getting with that set up. I’ve just been told by others don’t settle for a 1648 and to get an 1848 because it planes much easier and easier to distribute weight. Others run 14-16 footers all different widths. Some have larger boats. 19’ by idk how wide.
I am now considering maybe a 35 Briggs then if I decide to pick up a used as frame I can. Just trying not to spend too much. But you know what they say, buy once cry once

Right now I have a 420cc on a 1436... top speed 20... light. Average speed loaded down to the gills... 14. So I’d be happy for a while but don’t want the urge to upgrade ever again for a long time lol

Then go with a 35. Cause even with that, you will have the urge to mod it

Just out of curiosity. What’s a good price for one of those? I can always google... but I don’t know what a “good” price is

Just a 35hp engine. If I end up ordering one after I do my taxes, I don’t wanna overpay lol

$2650-$2700 is about the going rate for a 35 briggs new in the box.

There is a 35 backwater on here for sale for like 3200.

I can get you the exact model number I used to replace my entire powerhead back in June if you want but it was that exact price +-$20 no matter virtually where I called.

Bcoonce, I am getting 20 mph by myself in duck hunting mode; drops to 17.5 mph with two hunters (2 @ 200#) and gear. At 64 years young, glad the Backwater is a little easier to drive, eventually may go the 23 copperhead (read "simple) route to save my rotator cuff. I am one of those guys that actually drives the speed limit and enjoy my cup of coffee and am not beset with ADD! Whatvever you get, enjoy the ride.
