Hi Guys,

I just received my SPS Long-tail and mounted it on my new 420 Predator Engine....... Can this long-tail shaft be run out of the water or does it need to be in the water for cooling purposes......... For example: ... Perhaps I am doing some, mods or maintenance on the engine or want to crank it up during the winter just to exercise the engine and shaft but the boat is on the trailer.

Will I screw up the bushings or bearings if the shaft and prop is sitting there spinning for a while out of the water? I would hate to overheat the shaft parts. I"m sure that it would get pretty hot.

Thanks!

I wouldn’t let it run for more than 5 minutes or anything, but your probably fine cranking it up and running the gas out of thecarb, warming it up to change oil, etc. Not sure if those things have bearings or bushings. You could spray it with a water hose to make yourself feel better.

I’ve done that for years on GD and MB long tails with no issues.

In the prop shaft are bushings. If it's still a Delrin bottom bushing at the end, you will melt it if you get it too hot. But a few minutes to keep the rust off a couple times a winter won't hurt it unless maybe you run it wide open those few minutes. If you're worried about it splash water on it.

If I want to run mine for a while out of the water I pull the prop shaft off and don't worry about it.

It has a plastic bushing at the end and the inner bushings are made of chinese wood. Sounds like you don't need to worry- seems like a pretty sturdy build.

You can get a bronze bushing to replace the nylon bushing in the end. Tap some zerk fittings between the inner bushings and fill it full, you can run the motor out if water for anything your trying to accomplish. I've had my KKK kit I bought used and beat the crap out it for the 3 years. Keep it greased and carry your spare $20 prop you'll be set. I love the sarcasm from guys thinking thier cool talking stupid because they have an over price name brand set up, funny part is they still be shopping at harbor freight running predators on the "name brand kit" makes a ton of sense, (not bashing HF or predators) but I bet he's got Yeti an Costa stickers all over his crap too! How that Mr smarty pants lol

You can't hurt it running it just to warm up the engine, just don't run it wide open for 20 minutes or something dumb like that
