I have a brand new 22hp predator on a go devil frame. 9x6 prop in good shape pushing a 1548 boat. Engine has tons of power out of the hole and gets up on plane with 2 people and gets 17 mph. Problem is my tach says I'm only turning 2100 rpms and can't get higher. I put a zip tie on the governor spring. Just wondering if the governor is keeping my rpms low or something else.. it will turn higher than that on land. Dont know if the load effects how the governor works. Considering by passing it. Any advice will hlp.

Your tach is lying. Probably set wrong for the twin cylinder 4 stroke. If you're doing 17mph with 2 people, you're turning more than 2100 rpms by a lot, and that's not really far off from where you should be on speed with that engine and load.

The engine sounds like it should have a lot more. If I had to guess it sounds like the engine matches what the tach says. I was expecting to get closer to 4000 rpm and it doesn't sound like its turning anything close to that. Thought maybe it could be a governor issue.

17mph with a 22hp longtail isnt gonna happen at a legit 2100 rpms. There may be more in the motor, but that tach isnt right either. At 0% slip with a 6 pitch prop at 1 to 1 gear ratio (because there isnt any reduction), max possible speed at 2100 rpms is 12 mph. But I guarantee you its slipping some. Until you get past 30hp, it's unlikely on a 1548 that youd see much past 18 or so mph. Maybe 20 in shallow water.

Oh, and ziptying the Gov spring has the effect of eliminating what it's trying to do. Itll fight your ability to pull the throttle, but because there's no spring anymore, you pulling on the throttle wins over the gov.

Russ is right. My 23 runs right at 22 with that 9x6 prop at 3600 rpm and ive got it on a tiny little duck skiff
