BackStory:

Dad has a 1652 with 35hp MB Long Tail. I have run that boat with that motor many times. But recently i purchased a 1648 with a little 4 horse regular outboard. I took it to the duck blind yesterday and liked to tore that outboard up a couple times before it was all said and done. The motor quit on me on the way out and i had to push pole the last 1000 yards up the access ditch. I vowed in that moment i needed to get rid of that motor and put a mud motor on it. I think a long tail would do me better for what i do.

Questions:

What size motor would you put on it? What brand? Any specific setup modifications you would advise?

For over 10 years I used an 8HP LT on a variety of hulls with good success
it plowed thru a lot of rough places with an amazing amount of power...

But to plane out a pair of guys and gear an 18 to 23 HP LT would be needed...

I ran a 23GDLT on my GD 1648 and pushed 20mph solo - 17mph with 2 man hunting loads...

If that helps...

Get you a 25 Koehler. I have a 23 GDLT and wish I had the 25. Little more power and little better speeds I found

Interesting, I found the Koehler to be a little faster and a lot more torque, but that's different hulls for you. Nothing runs the same on different hulls lol

I could not get stuck with that 25, It would just eat and push , always power, But it hit a top end wall as far as speed. Im not knocking it, Both great motors. In truth im not too much concerned with speed anymore, Its load capabilities and getting in , getting out that matters.

Yeah you are right bro. I like my little 23 a lot too. It has gotten me out of a bind and getting me to places I would not have gotten without it

Ran both a 1544 alumaweld and now a 1648 grizzly for years with Kohler 25's. Great motor and decent match, though neither is a true mud hull...a friend has a 1990 lowe 1648 and has the original Kohler GD 25 longtail still on it, albeit he has replace a few internals. I have run both GD 25 and MB 27 and now have a 26.5 Backwater. I have to recommend the BW over the others, take a look at their website, give them a call. The new lite frame (no U-joint) looks like the ticket! Better price than the others, not cheap by any means, but IMO a simply better quality motor and CS is great.

Go had big as you can afford. Backwater makes a great kit. You can through a Briggs, Kohler, or pred on it. I have a pred on my surface drive, I'm very happy with that engine.
