Figured I'd grease the u-joint on my BW 26.5 efi since I now have 70+ hours! Removed the "bell shroud", that was easy. Found that the zerk is offset 45 degrees towards the motor shaft and there is no clearance for the grease gun tip!! Backed it off and also tightended hoping this would allow space but no cigar. Any clues? Figure by replacing this zerk with a 90 degree one it should allow me to grease it. Seems trite but why would a 45 zerk be installed? :ugeek:

I need to check mine out this evening. Did you snap any pictures?

Sorry, no pics. Weird that they would put that type of zerk for that application- unless you're not supposed to grease the u-joint which I don't think is the case.

Well I have the lite frame not the ujoint. I'm only tracking 2 zerks on mine. Give Jake a call and get the scoop.

Just got off the phone with Jake...says to turn the prop by hand to reach a point where there is room for the grease gun tip...not sure this will do it- he did agree that putting a 90 degree zerk should solve the issue. :geek:

Eventually might go the lite frame/no u-joint setup with my next motor. Finally by adding a half shim got the motor to stop popping out.

Yes, Huck, the cavitation plate shim, used 1 1/2...world of difference, sure hurts when that motor pops out and you have to keep pressure on the tiller to keep it in- specially when you've torn some muscles in the arm trying to free the boat from a mud raft.

Got it done! Otherwise would not sleep tonight! It was a combination of turning the prop by hand to move the u-joint and then backing off the grease zerk a half turn to make room for the grease gun tip. Four squirts later and the friction noise gone and I am happy. I believe they recommend greasing this every 25 hours or so. Thanks again Backwater!
