Sorry, I used search function but did not get access...need new tank. I have read elsewhere negative reviews on both Attwood and Five Oceans tanks due to leaks and "ballooning" of tanks because they did not properly vent. Not sure about this- somebody suggested swapping older vented cap with newer one? Anyway, would appreciate any recommendations and/or suggestions on new tank!

I just replaced a moeller fuel tank that was five years old. It had a lot of cracks from the sun. I did a lot of googling and couldn’t really find any with awesome reviews so I ended up going with a scepter from academy for $59. I filled it up yesterday and of course in about 30 min it had doubled in size. These new tanks don’t let the pressure off.

I found out a few years ago to drill out the vent on the moeller tank as the pressure was building up so much it was pushing past my injectors.

I removed the rubber under the scepter cap so maybe it will vent better. If it doesn’t i will run a drill bit through this one. ( remove the vent thumb screw and drill through the center of the cap and reinstall the thumb screw).

I then headed to the lake. Motor ran great.

Ok, thanks. Seems like an easy fix- don't want gas flowing into motor like that. Probably mess up my EFI.

Yea. I checked the oil and I was crazy high. I drained everything out. Was full of gas. No more problems after drilling the cap out.

I talked to a couple of local marine stores and they all said to only expect 4 to 5 years out of the new tanks before they start cracking.

I had to get one of the new tanks about 5 years ago. I know a lot of people don’t like to use the quick disconnects on their fuel lines, but I put them on there to prevent the fuel being forced into the engine. Makes it easier to just throw the gas can in the back of the truck to fill it up too. No issues with them, I got the evinrude style with the barb and the nozzle. Mine hasn’t cracked yet, but it has stayed in the garage the last few years.

Just read about a Fuel Demand Valve that is fitted on the line between the tank and bulb that is supposed to prevent any fuel from flooding the motor. I went from a quick connect/bulb assembly to a straight line 1/4" id from the tank to the inline filter, since my Backwater is EFI.
Frank, any issues with your 40 EFI and the straight line? Do you have an older vented cap tank or new non-vented?
Best and cheapest fix on new tank is to make a vent on the cap though this may not comply with EPA regs. :ugeek:

Well, went a new 6 gallon Moeller tank with gauge and rotating outlet. Overtons had it on sale and with shipping still 10$ cheaper than local suppliers. Just hoping my old cap fits the new tank. If that fails, will re-install quick connect to see if that prevents bulging and/or gas overflow.

Just noticed they sell a replacement cap for the newer Moeller EPA cap on Amazon! If my old cap does not work I will be getting this.

Thank you southern hunter, for posting pic- I have not yet learned how to do this...this should help most of those who have experienced bulging tanks and gas overflow.
