Post small engine careers
im gettin really tired of my job and some of the folks i work with! i been thinkin about goin to trade school for small engine repair. im only 19 and graduated high school last year, so i need to do something now because im tired of being broke! haha

so my question is, . . . is small engine repair a good trade??

my plan is, . . get through the school and work for someone for a while and save up and then build my own shop and become a mudmotor dealer and service them, and work on other small engines and also sell parts, and maybe even try to get to be a boat dealer.

im in north louisiana and there's NOWHERE to buy a mudmotor up here, and when you do find one its used and the guy wants a fortune for it! and when i was tryin to find a Tiny Tach the people at about 5 different shops gave me a funny look and said "whats that"!!

does this sound like a good idea? or are there no dealers up here for a reason???

if you really want trade school.... go through motorcycle v-twin training.... that way you can get into small engines, motorcycles, etc...

which campus? If it is the shreveport campus you want this curriculum.... or similar... motorcycles and power toys are the way to go... this is just my opinion and please dont let this dictate what you really do... if you like engines

Or you can go to marine repair and work on boats. There's a higher end boat shop around the corner from me and the guy is banking! Works on all engines. From jetskis to outboards to ski boats. He also a painter and a fiberglass guy. This dude is raking in cash

once you become an experienced mechanic you'll find that it's all relative. my advice would be to take up a mechanical based trade geared toward something that's in high demand and offers job diversity. whether it be motorcycle, marine, or an automotive career you can always dabble with small engines on the side while working a steady job.

Or go into the medical field, make plenty of money and then buy all the toys you want.

Working small engines seems like it could be profitable. While over at the college try and pickup a few business classes. You don't need to get a degree in business but take an Accounting 101 for sure. What they show you in that class would definetly help you when it comes to dealing with the bank and your own business.

Remember treat you customers right and they become your best salesmen.

Good Luck.

Go spend a little while in Orlando at MMI ( I think it's MMI) . Get certified on outboards , inboar/outboards , disels, and PWC. Then you can either stay in FL and bank or come home and work for someone locally. Eather way with that little paper you can make good money. Selling boats is a hard buisness, but repairs is where it's at. Plus cash jobs are your friend.....

Southern has a A&P Mech program that is 2 years. You would have to drop some jack on tools, but who knows you might be able to get a pell grant or a minority scholarship.

Are you just stuck on small engine's????
Or anything Mechanical???

I have thought about the MM service center myself--I live close to Dallas. All of the small engine shop's around here tell you to take that damn engine off whatever frame that is and just bring in the engine. They refuse to work on it if not.

I don't know where you are located, but you might talk with a local dealer. I know the one i used to work for sent me to school. It would be 2-4 weeks at a time.
