Re: Ducks Unlimited flooding alternative habitats for oil sp
Given that they have stopped the oil,and not much of it has hit the interior marsh, they are just short stopping and makeing for some good hunting at the south's disavantage. I posted several weeks ago that there was talk of shutting down hunting in the mississipi flyway along with the short stopping with the intent of keeping the birds out of harms way.
With out hunting presure the birds will stay put and out of harms way until freeze up. If they realy cared the feds would shut it down for a season. Money talks!!!!
If they allow hunting in those areas, they are shooting over bait. My understanding is that the crops have to be planted at the right time of the year with the intent to harvest at the correct time. Flooding a corn field in not a normal ag pratice.
Useing du funds and allowing hunting those fields to the benifit of just a few select individuals would be a slap in the face of every southern duck hunter

Re: Ducks Unlimited flooding alternative habitats for oil sp
Man it just seems like that everyone wants to blame not killing ducks on something or someone.... I love duck hunting with all my heart, note I said hunting and not killing.... Duck hunting is all about numbers to the magority that buy their Fed duck stamp... And its a dam shame... I aint got alot of money and dont kill big numbers... But let me tell you something, I get up a 3 a.m. just like hunters do, not knowing if Im coming home with a limit or not.... Why? because thats what I like to do... I dont blame it on DU, DW, or the Feds if I dont shoot any ducks that day.... I get my ass back out of bed at 3 a.m. the next morning head to another spot and enjoy another day of hunting ducks.... If you dont like "your kill numbers" or how you think DU and Feds are fucking you, maybe its time to pack up and move north or maybe find another animal to hunt.... Noting, that it is called hunting and not killing......

I hunt the same areas as JD and can tell you that he is stating facts as far as the amount and species that we have now compared to 10 years ago. They just don't make it here anymore the way they did, the numbers do not lie.

Re: Ducks Unlimited flooding alternative habitats for oil sp
Look i never said i was supporting DU i just said this flooding these fields aint goin to hurt anything. And it dont matter if they do things for the hunters or things for the big wigs. they still tryin to do the same things Delta Waterfowl is doin and thats try to help the ducks. Now i posted this to see what others thought about not to argu about DU or anyone else. U can put yur own opinion in cause i dont care. I have my own opinion on what its goin to do

Re: Ducks Unlimited flooding alternative habitats for oil sp
DU has done alot of good for ducks. But they have really done alot of good for private land owners and that is the reason I don't support them or their goals. My choice. If your saying ducks will take care of themselves I agree, SO WHY FLOOD ANYTHING? The oil is not nearly as bad as it was thought to be and ducks will find safe places on their own. Flooding more land (private) on my tax dollar dime sux 2 fold. Its a waist of tax dollars and it will give birds more options. More options for the private land owners probably. Not public land hunters who are being forced into ever decreasing huntable areas. The state of LA does not maintian what they already have to maximize its desirable vertues. Look at the state of MO for example where they put their money back into the public hunting. Its hard for non maintained public lands to compete with the private in this state. In MO, the public lands I saw rivaled any private big money duck club. On the public dime. Wonder what LA would look like had we been pumping in all that money over the years like MO? Flyways are changing. Numbers of birds that come down have decreased, at least during the time frame allowed for our seasons. Alot of it due to the very desireable properties that have been developed to the north of us that hold birds longer IMO. They come down later and stay later into the spring. I see birds now almost till summer here. I'll be out there taking the good with the bad. Half a limit is usually a good day and the rare limits these days are just lagniappe. Im not a mallard purist but in the last 10 years we have gone from shooting 40-50% mallards on a given hunt to me shooting 3 greenheads last year and less than 10 per year for the last 4 years. Support DU if you like, hell most of those yahoos don't even hunt so it does't matter to them how the money is spent. Its a status thing for folks who like to feel good about themselve and be able to say they support wildlife. The only answer as I see it is to produce as many new birds every year by pumping all that money into breeding grounds. More birds = more posibilities.

Re: Ducks Unlimited flooding alternative habitats for oil sp
i agree with u POKER. They do alot for private land owners such as keeping frozen places unfrozen ( which gives them no reason to leave really which i dont support. ) but we dont have to worry about that down in these parts. And if they gave a shit about the public like they do the private it might be alot better. But i dont think this flooding the fields down here will have that much of a affect. Yea there will be more places to sit. But we are used to alot of flood water down here dont change alot. Everythings has its ups and downs. It will not keep me from chaseing the mallards all over the place just to get a few limits if possible.

Re: Ducks Unlimited flooding alternative habitats for oil sp
I say it can based on what happened last year. We have all wished for that cold winter to bring the birds down. We got it but at the same time we got the flooding, It did little good when the birds had so much water in the area to choose from. They sat out in those private fields all day. They didnt have to go to the traditional watering holes. My bird numbers have been consistant, low but consistant, for years. It was way off last year. I expect it to be back to normal this season where shooting 3 birds is a good day as long as we dont flood.

Re: Ducks Unlimited flooding alternative habitats for oil sp
that i can agree with. great weather and to much water. Yea we had some times when the water got down were we hunted and we had some days were we just hammerd em but it never stayed at a constant low level. But i do think them birds will feed all night or day in them fields but some of them goin to hit that timber to rest down

no they are paying for the water that comes through the gates into the crawfish ponds from what i understand, i think they pay for the water through the river authority
