 Re: ID this duck
We have tons of those here in South Florida, I'm actually surprised if I don't take one home on every hunt. One of the best tasting around.

 Re: ID this duck
Looks like a mottle to me (speculum tells ya). Like Chico said, it's pretty easy to shoot one every trip. They eat okay, unless they have found a bunch of small apple snails to gorge on. Quite a few get banded down here. I shot a banded mottle one day, went back to the same clump of grass a few days later and shot another banded mottle.... With consecutive band numbers.

 Re: ID this duck
Well fellas this one is going to the taxidermist. I killed it about 300 miles from the Gulf in northeast Alabama. We will kill a few blacks occassionally but never a mottled so I think it is very mount worthy.

 Re: ID this duck
I was thinking after looking at it closely, it could be a hybrid.
The underbelly and feathers nearest the tail are way to pale to be a black duck, they are super dark all over, even underneath, but that bill isn't as bright as a mottled either, it's like a black duck hen. Were it's underwings very white? The speculum of a black duck (male and female) is also very deep purple, this one is teal colored.
