Post Boat goes down on the Mississippi
Anyone know the details yet of who and what happened? I hear that one is missing. Nothing confirmed as far as I know. Did hear was not wearing life jacket.

Looked like it would have been pretty brutal this morning with regard to the wind.

Post Re: Boat goes down on the Mississippi
There is a thread on it, in Tiger Droppings. Big discussion on having or not having waders on. Some good points on both sides.

I have never been in that part of the river, but I have been on some rough water in Lake Ponchartrain in a GTrax 1754 plus a hunt deck, but non hybrid front. Only once did I feel it was just too rough and turned around and went back in protected water. I have taken on lots of tug boat waves and stuff. So I am not sure how bad it was, I hear it can be rough.

I just do not understand this feeling of not wearing a life jacket. I am ok if you dont, but it does not end up good usually if you get thrown out of the boat. Hitting that cold water has to disorient you. I have had to hit the cold water before at a dock, when I lost my footing going from boat to bulkhead in high wind, it was probably 8ft of water but I did not panic.

Not to derail the thread, but what life jackets are you guys wearing? You prefer the standard or auto inflating?

Winter months, I have a float coat. Summer, auto inflate.

I have a regular life jacket that I wear religiously. The auto inflate ones get ruined with the high humidity in south Louisiana and replacing cartridges in them.

I was told by a game warden that if you wear a float coat, be sure to wear that strap between your legs. that way if u fall in the coat can't ride up and drown you.
I haven't worn my float coat since he told me that years ago. mine didn't have the strap.

Mine has a waist belt on the outside...but nothing like a crotch strap on it. Mine prolly a Gen I, though. It’s an old one....I’d be willing to bet at least 16-18 years old.

Sad situation all around...especially without one wearing a PFD.

Out of curiosity, because I don’t know so im asking. I realize the MS River is huge, and can have tons of power.
But is it the current, or is it truly only dangerous when the wind is howling and causes big waves in certain areas or what?

It's the current bro, my dad was a commercial fisherman for 20 years and always spoke about the danger of the Mississippi because of the current. It's bad in there man. I wouldn't cross it in a mud boat

It's both. The waves can kick up pretty good too and when combined with the current, they can be a bit unpredictable how your small light boat will react.

I’ve crossed some rough water in small boats, always pointing the nose into the wind as much as possible. I’ve never been in strong current and wind at same time so I was curious.

I’m sure this boat wasn’t the only one to cross that area, just makes me wonder what and where it wrong or if no matter who the operator it would not have ended well

I’d still like to know more about the boat, motor and load. Another factor to consider...were the spark plug wire insulation deteriorating? If they were getting wet and had poor insulation, they could have been grounding out creating a loss of power. Lots of variables to consider. Sure, flotation in the boat could have been a saving factor. PFD’s would have been more of a factor.....as I read about two bodies pulled out of Lake Pontchartrain.....next to their fishing boat....the two were not wearing PFD’s. No amount of flotation in their boat could have saved them....just saying.

more asking a question here than making a statement. But it seems to me that wearing a PFD Is far more important than floatation in the boat. Does anyone even need to worry about floatation in the boat if you wear a pfd? I do not see boat floatation keeping one dry. I do not see boat floatation even keeping one safe. Are we looking at boat floatation as just another tool in case of an accident that would not be all that good anyway in the fact that a pfd is far better?

People think I’m weird for it, but I always wear a life vest and have a small dry bag clipped to it with a pair of sweats and a towel in it as well as my spot GPS clipped on my.

If the boat goes down, I can get to shore, dry off, then signal for help.

I’m a triathlete and former Marine who is still in good shape, but cold water doesn’t care, it’ll kill you. Don’t play around.
