 The right to work bill
Just want to know what you guys think about the right to work bill. I know most of the southern states are right to work states. I am interested to see how it affected people or if it affected anybody at all. I am a Union Carpenter and it affects me if it passes. Another bill they are trying to pass affects the schools by cutting money from public schools and giving the extra money to private schools. So the teachers get hit twice by affecting the teachers union and education. If the education bill passes it will cut teachers jobs and double the class sizes. I would just like to hear peoples opinion and views.

Re: The right to work bill
Fuc unions!
There is a reason Unions represent only 10% of America's workforce.....and that number is constantly dwindling.

Re: The right to work bill
Typically, heavily republican states have right to work and heavily industrialized/democratic states have closed shop union rules. It makes sense. Where laws favor workers/laborers/the hard working men and women, right to work laws are defeated. In other states, the corporations win big time. If one were to analyze the average pay of a worker is either category, you might be shocked at the difference in pay scale. Workers in Non union/right to work states are getting it shoved up their rear ends in a big way.
Solution: Raise minimum wage to about $15.00 per hour, if not more. At that rate, all the welfare recipients every Republican claims don't deserve it would see a windfall in pay and would do everything they could to get a job.

Re: The right to work bill
I would hate to be hampered by a union. I am able to negotiate with my boss my pay as well as with my employees on their pay. The better you are at what you do the better you will be paid. In order to keep you working for me, I have to offer benefiets that are comprable or better than my competition. If you are an unskilled general laborer it will hurt because your a dime a dozen and not expected to stay with a company longer than a year or two. The cost of living goes down alot in a right to work state. The workforce is much more competitive because pay is not based solely on tenure. If you are very good at what you do and show ambition and responsibility you can and will jump ahead in promotions over a more tenured employee who is average.

Re: The right to work bill
The thing is in construction I have been on both sides. The union hourly rate is the same as the non union hourly rate I have estimated for both sides and it is about the same the thing that wins the bids is the safety record and it is proven that right to work states have more injuries and deaths in the construction and industrial field than states with organized labor. An example is where I work at a power plant I work for union scaffold company safety is priority. A company who cleans the units down during a outage is non union, makes $8.00 a hour. Works as long as they want when they work over 40 hours they get time and a half. These guys try to work 40 hours straight never go home. How is that safe? There is no law inforced or anything. If these guys would get in a union they would get paid time and a half for anything over 8 hours. They deserve more than what they get paid it is a dirty dangerous job I respect these guys because they are the first to go in and blast the klinkers out to make it safe for our company to go in and build the scaffold.

Re: The right to work bill
Believe me when I tell you, if you go on a refinery worksite here safety is priority.......There will always be accidents, hence the word accident, but they are greatly minimized. You have to have all the safety classes but some refineries make you take their specific classes or some companies make you take theirs. OSHA Reps are everywhere it seems. Last time I was at the lng facility I had to go through a 45 min safety class because it had been over a year since i was in it last and i was their to hang blinds in a control room.

Re: The right to work bill
All a union does is mirror the power that we have given our lawmakers and congress, only in reverse. So, they are able to monopolize against their employers just like the average American worker is monopolized against by our government.
Having made this realization, I hold unions in no more esteem than our overpowered government, they are in a position to benefit themselves at the cost of someone else.

Re: The right to work bill
A dedicated Teamsters union worker was attending a convention in Las Vegas and decided to check out the local brothels.
When he got to the first one, he asked the Madam,
"Is this a union house?"
"No,'"she replied, "I'm sorry it isn't."
"Well, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?"
"The house gets $80 and the girls get $20,'"she answered.
Offended at such unfair dealings, the union man stomped off down the street in search of a more equitable, hopefully unionized shop.
His search continued until finally he reached a brothel where the Madam responded,
"Why yes sir, this is a union house. We observe all union rules."
The man asked, "And, if I pay you $100, what cut do the girls get?"
"The girls get $80 and the house gets $20."
"That's more like it!" the union man said.
He handed the Madam $100, looked around the room, and Pointed to a stunningly attractive green-eyed blonde.
"I'd like her," he said.
"I'm sure you would, sir," said the Madam. Then she gestured to a 92-year old woman in the corner, "but Ethel here has 67 years seniority and according to union rules, she's next.'"
NOW YOU Know what's wrong with the AUTO INDUSTRY, EDUCATION AND GOV'T UNIONS and the seniority system in the House and Senate.

Re: The right to work bill
While unions were a Good thing at some point in our history they are not needed and cause more problems than do good. Unless you happen to be a vested and ranking member pulling in the big bucks. And IMO you can blaim your union for the hole they dug for you. My experience with unions Me: I need that lumber moved so I can access that area for inspection. Electrician and Job Super: We will have to get a carpenter up here. Me: WTF you talking about? Super: Its a union job and we can't handle the lumber. Me: Are you serious? I want someone from every trade on this job site up here right now to follow me around when I'm here or you can forget your inspections and target date. Dumbest chit I ever heard of. But thats a union for you......................

One of our Senators in our Legislature introduced a bill to end collective-bargaining. The unions were out in full force protesting. The unions are killing our state. the firefighters, state workers and police unions are out of control. Teachers aren't far behind.

Re: The right to work bill
While I've worked both union & non union, I currently work on the railroad, & if not for the UTU & BLET, we would be screwed. The carriers that we work for (KCS in my case) would be able to pay us less wages, send us anywhere on the system at any time for any reason, and make us do whatever job they wanted us to do. I hired out as a conductor, not as an engineer, not as a track laborer, not as a diesel mechanic, not as a carman, I'm a conductor, period. Without the union I could be sent from Beaumont as a conductor, to Kansas City, Mo as a laborer for a day, & then to New Orleans as a carman for a day. Might sound far fetched, but I've seen it on non union rail jobs that service industries. I realize that today's are nothing like they used to be, but you guys working non union jobs making wages in the $20-$30 / hr range can actually thank the unions for setting the standards for your crafts' wages. Employers are willing to pay you more if you're non union so that they don't have to deal with the contract negotiations. Like it or not, that's how it is.

I would like to think that there paying me because I have 16 yrs experience and I'm licensed and bonded and build to 2010 California building codes. Where as Texas goes by 2003 codes and only needed in city limits! I have lots of union friends Camo and I'm not trying to piss any-body off. it didn't work for me. And I don't think the light bulb guy at Chevrolet deserves 28$ an hr. Unions did do alot for this country but they will be un-employed due to immagrants working for 7.25 Dguidry I don't have enough time to wikepedia all the things you are saying. Lament terms please.

Re: The right to work bill
I don't have a problem with unions in the private sector working for job safety and pay but your retirement is yours to save for.what has killed american manufacturing is the unions demands for unbelievable benefits and pensions. We have unions here and most union members have no idea what their unions are doing behind closed doors. Wasted members would rather have jr. Members laid off rather than give up 50 bucks a paycheck. If I don't make money I don't get paid, if I mess up a job, I eat it, its just not "fair" maybe we should make a law that would require lawyers to make up for mine or any other private business losses. That way nobody would go broke and have to eat rice and beans.

Re: The right to work bill
Guidry, I'm just a simple ol redneck, can you please speak English for those of us who didn't go to law school? I'm still tryin to figure out if I should knock the chit outta you or say thanks. Don't get me wrong, alot of the trouble today falls back to the union protected employees that aren't worth their weight in dog chit. I actually hold 2 union offices, & one of those offices require me to put my ass on the line for some really sorry ppl that I wouldn't piss on if they were on fire had we worked in an open shop, however I must represent them fairly or I'd be as sorry as they are. I'm not saying every job should be a union job, but ALOT of the different industries in today's society NEED to be union protected in order to maintain a fair & truly safe work environment for the men & women working in them. For those of you that are fortunate enough to work non union & make union wages or greater & not have to deal with management that I do, consider yourself very lucky & do whatever you can to protect your career.
