Wow always trying to play the race card. What ever happened to the word " Just Stupid". If my body was covered with a paper suit I don't think I would stand next to a fire so why would you stand in a fukn river with a current if you can't swim. My son is 3 and as much as I am around the water I spent $250 for 5 days of one on one swim training for 30 minutes a day to teach him how to survive falling into the water. He is now doing front flips off the side of the pool. That is not that much money considering your child's life. http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/ ... 37438.html |

Doesn't it make yall sick how its never their fault because they dont have the opportunitys or have been turned away because they were black? Yeah there grandparents couldnt swim at the public pool but everytime you go there now the water is full of terapins. I wouldn't be suprised if the Red River committe or Army Corps Of Eng. gets sued for this somehow. You dont swim in a river with current if your not a strong swimmer. Being black dont have nothin to do with swimmin and its 100 percent the parents fault for this |

The RedRiver is NOT a swimmin' hole ...... don't matter what yore skin color is !!!! We have swam it .... several times ..... always with a life jacket on !!! Altho it's tragic ...... It shouldn't have never happened. 100% agreed that the parents are at fault if thay was there. |

It is extremely sad. But Brooks is a little off on that. We swim that very spot all the time along with hundreds of others every summer. We have gone there for many years but my kids were taught how to swim at an early age. Its not far from the house. There is not a bad current on the river right now. You just need to know how to swim. They have blocked off land access to the sandbar as of this morning but we go by boat anyway. Someone will get sued due to the negligence of the parents. Its a sandbar. It changes every year depending on the water conditions. The big change to that particular sandbar and water depth is due to the fact that they dredged out all that sand from that spot and pumped it across the street to build up those fancy apartment complexes. What used to be a gradually sloping sandbar dropps off quick now and the resulting whirlpools during high water have carved out some good holes in it. However the biggest issue is the fact that the City of Shreveport is broke and did not open all those swimming pools this summer. So they are turing to the river to swim. The city will have to pay I'm sure, with the tax dollars of the hard working folks that cant seem to move out of there fast enough. |

80% of drowning victims are would be rescuers. No telling how many more people will never learn to swim after reading, seeing, or hearing about this.... |

Poker and me both spend countless hours on the Red all year long, I myself, like him, have swam in that very spot as well as others all up and down the river without a problem! Fact is, if you caint swim, why wade out into a river? And how many of you, would just stand there and was your kids drown? Hate to put it this way, but its like mother nature, call it natural selection, weeding out the stupid, of Darwin Awards! |

This thread is sad. I have a little one and can only empathize with those families. Can not imagine it! There is no "mother nature" and certainly no such thing as "natural selection". When the lord calls you home it don't matter if you are yellow, purple, or white. Definitely has nothing to do with being stupid, wouldn't we all be in trouble? ![]() |

I have also been to this spot many of years, it's close to the house. Shouldn't go near water if you can't swim, it's common sense. |

There was a toddler at San Luis Pass which is in Galveston, TX. This area has strong current flow besides the jetties it is the only spot in West Bay where bay water can drain. A mom instructed her toddler to wash his / her hands in the water before eating. The kid was later found a day later. The toddler had drown and washed up 5 miles down from where they were. It's sad and if your near the water keep lifejackets on your kids, don't let them out of your sight! |

The one kid that was saved (by a white kid at the beach that no one is talking about) fell into deep water. The 6 that drowned all jumped in in an attempt to save him and each other. Its hard to second guess what went through the parents head but I know I could not stand by and watch my children die without attempting to save them. Even if it took my life.... |

I'm not gonna say all, but most of da colored folks don't have da same value of life as we do. I watched a black women throw herself on da ground kickin and screamin while da police and paramedics took her mother's body out da house after she passed away. And not 30 seconds after da ambulance drove off she got up, went in her mothers house and came out wit a grocery bag full of money laughin and jokin wit her friend like nuthin ever happened. Sad but true. |

JC, I responded to several death scenes as a police office. Most were hospice deaths with sick folks that died at home in the care of nursing staff. Even though it was an expected death we had to go to make sure there was nothing suspicious, make sure the people present disposed of the narcotics (namely morphine drip for cancer patients) and make a report of things. And in my observations at these scenes as well as in my personal life dealing with the deaths of my grandparents I will say this. And it has nothing to do with color. There is usually ONE (1) family member that takes care of the sick and dieing and they struggle for sometimes months or years even to do it without the help of other family. Then when the day comes that the person passes away the forkers come out of the woodwork to see what they can get their hands on. I have had to referee several disputes and a couple actual fights over chit like this. Its a pretty sorry scene but I can guarantee that every family out there has these type of folk in them. I know mine does and so does yours. And most of these were white folks........... |
