I have the Marlin 1895M .450cal. It is a fine caliber and gun combo for any big game in North America. I purchased it to pig hunt with but it does fine on deer also. Most would say that it is too much gun for white tailed deer, I dont like to have to follow blood trails though. What meat is really eaten out of the vital section anyway? Marlin makes the 1895G which is the 45/70. The 450 and 45/70 are nearly identical in performance. I strongly recommend the ported barrel if you do get one, they have a little bit of a kick.

I have a marlin guide gun in 45-70 and I also have Ruger #1 in 45-70. I would definatly recommend the marlin for a "dangerous game" hunt. but if your not needing the 2nd or 3rd follow up shots I'd say go with a H&R for cost reasons. I did see a H&R 45-70 that looks a lot like a sharps that looked like a LOT of fun, but I didnt want to drop 6-700 bucks on it.

Gee lee i would assume hes lookin at one for la prinitive season, the guide gun and ruger both are out the question. They do not meet the guidelines. The marlin is a lever and the ruger is post 1900.
