Rescue efforts underway after oil rig explosion in Gulf An oil rig has exploded 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana, with 12 people overboard and one missing, the Coast Guard said Thursday morning. Rescue attempts are underway for at least 12 people, Coast Guard spokesman John Edwards told CNN. 13 people were on board the rig total, Edwards said, noting 12 have been accounted for, but one person was missing. The accident took place 80 miles off the coast of Louisiana on the Vermilion Oil rig 380, which is owned by Houston-based Mariner Energy. The Coast Guard has multiple helicopters, an airplane and several Coast Guard cutters en route. It's unknown if there are any injuries. |

everybody is ok 1 injury the well was shut in and sandblasting was being done there is no spill as of now and the fire was probably caused by a spark near a vessel(tank) that was been worked on. |

Could have been anything. most people don't realize how long gas lingers in tanks , vessels..... so on. I'm sure it will be the end of the gulf forever again though with the media we have. I can't stant those pretty SOB s that get on TV and don't have a CLUE about anything. I guess if you are in Venice or somewhere close you know everything about the oilfield....Stupid People hurt my brain. ( No sarcasm towards anyone that the DWH incident TRUELY affected) |

Was offshore today when I heard about it. It's a Mariner platform and has been for a long time, and it is Vermilion 380A. It is not a rig it's the production platform. 2 different things. There was no drilling or workover rig on this platform. Our rig came off of this location about 6months ago. It was hit pretty hard by Ike in 2008 and needed repairs for 9 months while our drilling rig was on it. BTW South Tim 316 was a W & T location, now I think its ENI location. Our 1502 drilling rig was on it not long ago also. That isn't ST 316 in that picture, it is a much long platform. I can show you pictures of 316 if you'd like. ![]() |

Just to let you all know. I've been there personally and from what I just saw on the news, where the fire/flames are, there is a compressor in that area. I think it was a gas pipeline that ruptured and ignited. |

Looking at the photos here and the ones I have on file at work. Mariner added a piece of equipment in the area of the fire in that last pic. I can see that the well bay is intact and nothing is burnt in that area. Something happend with the production equipment and this fire has nothing to do with the wells themselves. |
