my dad is looking to buy an AR type rifle in 308. what's the most reliable kind out there? he shot a RockRiver and liked it but it hung up after a few shots so i think it may be marked off of the list....

Rock rivers are good guns I had one but it was a 223 and never had a problem with it my buddy had a bushmaster ar10 308 and it was also a good shooting gun

The FBI switched over to rock river a couple years back and that was the reason I bought it also parts are every where and are very common

I would go to some gun shows and by the lower and upper separate and you might same some money that way also if you buy a used upper make sure it hasn't been registered to a lower yet because you will be unable to transfer it over

Everything else is just an imitation.

Isn't Colt the only one in which the parts are not interchangeable with other manufacturers. Personally, I was gonna build a 5.56 and figured I could do it for about $800 complete upper, lower, and stock with the chromed barrel.

Colt is da brand bein used by our armed forces. I have put litterally over 100,000 rounds down range wit a colt. Dat says sumthin in my book.

it has to be an AR type gun. he had a bad motorcycle wreck 1 1/2 yrs ago and the only kind of gun that fits is one with a pistol grip.

I had the 5.56 CMMG and it was a hell of a gun

There are several different style lowers with different grips

What do you mean by AR style ?

AR's can be made pretty much any way you would want it

I've got a DPMS and a M&P 15t but this is the one for a .308 if you want one:

http://www.lmtstore.com/

they have been in the hands of the special forces for a while and just got another gov contract. they are a work of art for sure.

The LMT is the way to go depending on how much he wants to spend. My brother has an Armalite AR-10 for sale also if interested.

Armalite is a good reliable rifle. I've got an AR-15 with uppers for carbine and varmint hunting, and an AR-10 with a match upper. I've shot both in action matches where I routinely put 500 rounds through them in a morning. Both have held up very well, both have retained their accuracy, and I am not one to baby a rifle!

With that said, my buddy, who is a police armorer, opted for a Les Baer. It is very nice and very accurate, but has not been punished enough to address it's reliability.

If you want an ar-style rifle in an exotic caliber, try accuracy systems. They will build one for you and guarantee it's accuracy.

Check out the POF's. They are gas piston operated but $2,000+ I would get an armalite if I was in his shoes and didn't have the money for a POF

I went with the 6.8 so I could stay with the smaller platform AR15 and not the bulky AR10. Still has plenty of power. Glad I went that route, though I would still reccomend a .308 if you don't reload right now, as 6.8 ammo is expensive and limited

If you are looking for piston driven, look at Robinson Arms. AMAZING firearms. If not, I highly suggest CMMG, but I dont know if they build a 7.62 or not. I personally own 3 CMMG's, 1 Bushy, 1 Colt and 1 DPMS. all great guns but for the price I would do CMMG again in a heart beat!

I really like the 30 Remington AR upper concept. Ballistics similar to the 308 but you can use the same 223 lower - rounds short enough to fit in the mag well. Would be a great pig gun.

Another AR route is Precision Firearms (http://www.precisionfirearms.com).

Mark will build you anything that is possible and is a perfectionist in his work. I do agree that his website could have more info on it (such as ALL of the options), but give him a call. When he goes to the various gunshows and sets up his tables, he has his tools and parts with him. A customer can pick the style of recvr (forged/billet), type of hanguard, barrel maker/length/cal, and he will build it for them. He typically carries Les Baer, Lilja, Saturn, Walther Lother barrels (and a few more that I can't remember offhand).

it may be too late but had he thought about an encore? a true huntiing rifle with the same grip style. alot cheeper and lighter and easier to operate with his limited mobility. many cals and barrel lenths to chose from.
