 Re: Texas DPS
does it have a vin on it? if it does u will have to have them run that number and have a bill of sale from the previous owner to get a title or u can go the route i went. i just told them we built it awhile back to use it around on the farm and they just asked a couple questions like the length and what the max weight and they issued me a vin number and sent me a title and registration.

 Re: Texas DPS
Short answer - there are NO TITLES for trailers in Texas....
If ya buy a new one you get a fancy paper that looks like a title but it is only a chain of ownership document to the State....
A Bill of Sale signed by both parties with the sale price, date, and description including mfg models and ID numbers - if any - is all you need along with vehicle insurance - to get a Texas Plate for it....
No clue what you need if you take a Texas trailer to La....

 Re: Texas DPS
When I got my tags for mine I just told them it was home made and all the asked for was the load capacity of the trailer.

 Re: Texas DPS
Maybe not boat trailers, but other trailers that are not registered as farm trailers have titles in Texas. Texas trailer title is created by the certificate of origin.
Brad, are you trying to get a title for a boat trailer?

 Re: Texas DPS
I bought a trailer the was 5 or 6 years old that was never titled because the original owner registered it as a farm trailer. I was told the only way I could register it any other way than farm was to have the original owner write and sign a letter of why he did not title it. In Texas you go through you county tax assessor to register vehicles and trailers (for obvious reasons). A lot of people in Texas register their boat trailer as homemade (no taxes, no title).
If you have the certificate of origin you can probably get a title on it, especially if you purchased it from the manufacture or dealer. If it has a certificate of origin it does have a VIN or serial number.

 Re: Texas DPS
If you live in Louisiana an d need a title, you have to have a vehicle vin verification sheet completed and signed by a deputy, state or city cop. After that, take sheet to M V and they can issue youa tag for trailer. We do one a month.
