anybody on here do it? i'm thinking of trying to do it as a side gig. powder coaters are few and far between. thought that might be a plus since there are very few in the area. |

You will have to buy some pretty specialized gear (powdercoat rig, oven, sandblast rig) to get into the biz. It's not your garden variety throwaway paint gun we're talking about. How much that gear is, I haven't the foggiest. But I do know it ain't dirt cheap. |

yeah i know it isn't real cheap stuff. there's a 2 day school in tennesee i'm wanting to goto before i even think of buying equipment. |

There is a powder coating shop about 2 miles from my home. My buddy started it and then sold it. When he had it I got all my Harley parts powder coated for free. The guy now does a good job but I have to pay. There is never a shortage of stuff to be powder coated. I see sprint car frames there by the truck load and lots of fancy fences. I say go for it. You can do very good by this. Randy |

I saw a magazine for this company ( http://www.eastwoodco.com/index.jsp ) on my neighbors desk at his shop. They had small powder coating kits and i thought it was pretty cool. Depending on how big you wanna get into it, whether its just for you or you want to start a business. I thought i would throw that out there. |

A good electrostatic system will run you $2-5K, the oven you can get $500 to 500K depending on how large you need it to be....we just made a big BBQ pit with 8 burners.... Remember that if you get a system you can run regular paint through it with a few changes...... If you are wanting to get it up and going just call any equipment manufacturer and they will shoot you a quote and tell you what you will need.......... A friend of mine started by using a standard kitchen oven doing HD parts for friends around 10 years ago, he now has a 6,000 sqft shop, two ovens that can handle a pick up frames, 14 employees and more work than he can handle. |

i got interested by reading this guys posts. http://www.explorerforum.com/forums/sho ... 09&page=37 i like working with my hands and i just cant help but think that i would like it . i have a home oven that i plan on using. i just have to gather the rest of the stuff up. i have been doing some searching and reading on building an oven and that seems doable. i will probably build my booth and try to pick up a used/cheap blast cabinant to keep spending as low as possible....for now. maybe it will turn into something, maybe not. but i'm at the point that i think i'm just going to have to try it and see. i'm going to try to get to one of these classes before i do anything though. http://www.metalcrafttools.com/powdercoating.html |
