Used to see a lot of older drunks with "Jake-leg". Haven't seen that for a long time. Has to be made with pure copper fittings. Anything else will-can, cause death. |

Ok,,,,,,,,,,I have had some shine a couple of times. One batch was really pretty good. The other you could strip paint off an oil tanker. Now for the real question,,,,,,,,,,,,,why does shine kill you. (serious ? cause I don't understand what you boys are talking about) |

river. i will try to explain, from what a moonshiner in the swamp told me at least. if the rite person makes shine, the taste is unbelieavable, and u cant taste the very high alcohol content. |

Ok, so the distillation process is what messed them boys up. |

Post subject: | Re: moonshine |
i was under the impression that the high alcohol content got them.. hence the great taste, dont realize how much youve drank. sorry river, your correct once again, oh great knowing wise one. |

Post subject: | Re: moonshine |
no the ethylene glycol is more than likely what got them, left from the old antifreeze. |

Post subject: | Re: moonshine |
Distilling process/equipment is what gets you. If you know exactly how it was distilled/trust he cook you can try it. Personally I don't want to risk my life ![]() Antifreeze poisoning is a terrible way to go. |

Post subject: | Re: moonshine |
Not just the anti-freeze --- lead poisoning --- metal poisoning (an odd mistype) is the problem... Radiators are sealed with solder that is mostly lead - copper tubing that is sweatted with the wrong type of solder will kill too... The high heat and corrosive properties of steam and shine leach out the lead in the solder and put it into solution in the shine.... Once comsumed lead poisoning is cumulative and irreversable... Navy guys have the best shine - torpedo fuel is high grade Everclear.... SHAFER - just buy ya a bottle of the Everclear fer yer lemonade - or - my liquor store actually has 2 or 3 brands of jarred shine with a tax stamp on it.... |

Yall handle the cooking. Leave the likka making to the hillbillies. Don't believe all that blue flame shit either. Mugs will add chemicals to make the flame blue. There's tricks to making it get a false bead also. Just lucky up here in the Blue Ridge I guess. My old landlord made most of the shine around here. Gallon glass jug with a peach in it was 85 bucks. It was full test, no cut. Put your dick in the dirt in a hurry. Dude grew his own shiitake mushrooms, killed 10-15 bears a year, rode a 4-wheeler to the grocery store and owned one t-shirt. He was a multi-multi millionaire and had a house full of the most gorgeous daughters you've ever laid eyes on. I'd go pay the rent and he'd offer me some "homemade wine"...corn wine. Stagger home an hour later. |

PS - My pappy was a shine driver back in the hills of Georgia - they invented the "low rider" by fillin the trunk with sand around the jars and wettin it to keep them "cool" fer the customers.... To keep the car tight in the turns - and so the law woudn't see the back saggin and bouncin - they cut out almost all the suspension - souped up the motors and then put double mufflers on it to keep it quiet - but fast.... |

This thread cracks me up. It's funny to me to hear it talked about like some great mystery. 'round here everyone has a "buddy that might have some" ![]() One ole fugger up here "may carry a jug or three with him". To him, the greatest thing in the world is fishing the mouth of the rivers for corakers and brackish catfish. We call him Squib, cause that's what he uses for bait. He said he got pulled over one time and may have had 14 gallons in the back seat. He's got the nastiest looking mutt dog named Jep that rides with him. He told the officer "best not get too close to the winda, Jep might eat you up" ![]() |

My cousin got married and there from the hills in North Carolina. Well at the rehearsal dinner they were all at the barn so I asked my uncle whats going on down there. Needless to say them boys grow up on that stuff. I was feeling no pain that night. We also would have some at the hunting camp for those cold mornings. |

Last home brew hard liquor I had was from south of the border.... Friendly hispanic that worked with us showed up with some "home recipe" mescal - it was dark as furniture polish with chit floatin around in it... Three or four of us took a glass with about 2 oz each in the glass - man that was hard to shallow - then I commenced to sweatin and got kind nervous cause we was at work on a break - next thing I know I gotta hide from everybody cause I am feelin really strange - that stuff had me seein tracers and if I waved my hand it looked like a stobe light was on in broad daylight... Dayum - climbed up in the pipe racks near sum cold pipes and just hid fer the rest of my shift - acted like my radio was broke everytime they called lookin fer me... Found out later that the same thing happened to the other guys too... Couple of good Buds after work - shure did taste good - after the dang goofy chit wore off from that ther mescal stuff... I think they mixed in some strange cactus in that brew... Never again - nooo not me.... |
