Went out last night fishing, and a huge storm starting building over the lake, before we could get off the lake we had heaven 60mph wind. We found a sheltered shallow behind a rock point and was waiting it out. As we were waiting we seen to boat limping to shore both swamped and sinking. We ventured out into the rollers to lend a hand and rescue the couple that appeared to not have a life vest. We where right they where in a commercial hull, no life vests, over motored, small mod v, and we pumping and dumping water to make it to the shore. We made are way to them taking huge rollers over the bow so big I had to stand up cause the waves where so big water was hitting me in the face so hard it was knocking my contacts around and floating my cooler while my deck ran out. We made it to the swamped boat and gave them extra life vests and a extra bait bucket to dump water. We got them pulled into a shelter point where the boat took one more roller and sunk in 4 foot of water.
We gave them life vest as the boat tried to sink in 60 foot a 1/4 mile from shore ten minutes from sunset. My self bailing boat saved there life's and there boat. I was scared and have never been in that rough of water in a flat bottom but the 2054 went to work and kept us floating. I thank god I spent the extra money and went with the sbx there would be no bilge pump that would of kept up.

The other boat we seen we could never find again but we called it in to the wardens which recovered 3 fisherman without there 22 foot walleye boat which was swamped and turned over. I will never buy anything but a self bailing boat ever again weather is unpredicible and it happens fast. I owe mmt for giving me the advise to make my decision and go with the boat I bought.

Not fun at all! Glad y'all were able to lend a helping hand. One reason why I went with a wide boat, for added stability. I see water like that too it's not fun.

Ya a guy can't mess around with deep unprotected water it don't take much to get nasty. The winds where out of the east which is uncommon. We where on the west side so the waves had alot of time to grow. The worst part was the spacing of the waves my 20 footer need a few extra feet a few times to keep us out of the trough. Its was crazy watching a river of water run out of my boat. But the best part was after that we hit the shallows in the trees and made are way back in my kind of water the shallow muddy stuff that don't white cap.

How is your boat fitted... Does it have self bailing scuppers?

Ya two scuppers and a little channel in the back scuppers are 2x3 and can run a shit ton of water. The weakest link was the motor a had my air cleaner box straight down to help with suck water with a sock over the hole soaked in wd40 we still took water down the carb a couple times and had feather it back.

Hes the smart one... let him figure it out...

Just cut a octagon hole in your transom, and install one.

The boat we saved had a automatic bilge and a back up manual and a bait bucket they could not keep up with the water coming in.

The second boat was a brand tournament walleye boat. Should of been able to handle it but the driver said he took a wave and got scared and stopped he then took a wave broadside and was swamped. They swam to shore and there boat was pushed into the rocks where it was ground to death and flipped

I think he would have been fine if he kept going and kept his bow into the wind but heck I don't know it was sad seeing a 45000 dollar rig washing around.

Instructions for installing scuppers on dguidrys boat.

Find lowest point of transom.
cut large hole.
install a short rope.
tie one end to motor and one to your foot.
launch boat in deep water
drive fast but you better swim better.

Can you take and post pics of self bailing system? Im curious how it works! I've read the descriptions, but I still can't picture it in my head.

Ya I will take some pictures but it is real simple really. My boat has a fully sealed floor that is above the waterline at all times, engine wait natural makes boat sit lower in the back, then there is a small channel that catchs all water and evacuates out of the scuppers. Scuppers let water go out but dont let it come in if a wave hits you in the back our when you come of step ect. I will attach some pictures when I get the chance. It is a really handy system good for cleaning too, when I fish I carry a bucket and wash my deck after every fish throughout the day and everything runs right out. Bilge pump would clog up with carp scales in a normal system.

what if you have alot of debris like sticks leaves and stuff in the boat? wont that stuff get stuck in the valves and let water in. or im i missing how this works. Its a one way valve right?

Author:  autogateman [ Tue Jul 26, 2011 8:39 am ]
Post subject:  Re: Sbx series prodrive is awesome.

yeah they have a one way valve, then on the back they have some sort of fabric hose that lays over to help keep debris from coming in through the back. these boats are really nice, the only concern i thought about was the lifted floor height.
