we used to have a camp at Blind River Bar. We used to watch the guys pull up 4 or 5 ft. diameter cypress trees from the river. We used to catch small bull sharks in lake maurepas on gar lines, even caught some stingrays on the dock of the bar. I have never seen that big of a shark from out there though. Here is a pic from when i worked for Skoal, we went to the garfish rodeo at BRB in august, and they caught this in Maurepas. I know its small but its still a dam shark. It took a while to convince one of the models to hold it up to take a pic.

I wouldn't think it would be uncommon to have sharks out there.

Cypress use to logged heavily in the old days. Think they are protected in certain areas now. They would ring the trees in the winter time when all the sap was up. In the spring the sap would go down and drain out of the ring they cut around the base. This is what perserved the wood and why todays cypress isn't as tolerant to the weather and insects like cypress use to be. Today they just cut them like any other timber. Got to get the sap out, well thats what some of the old timers have told me any way.
Anyway, they would float these cypress out the swamps when the water came up and lots got lost in the process. They are still finding them from time to time buried in the mud that has silted in and perfectly preserved since no air or sunlight was able to break them down. Someone else may be able to correct me if I'm wrong. Its just what i've been told.

They do the same thing in the Great Lakes except no gators/sharks. Old timber that sunk while they were floating the massive log jams down the river. There's a local company here that gets the logs out and re-works it into flooring, posts, beams etc. They got started doing heart pine. Some beautiful stuff. 10" wide plank flooring. A lot of that stuff came from 1800's factories.
