 Re: bps or super nova?
I have a nova (pump) over 16 years of abuse and it's still my go to duck gun.

 Re: bps or super nova?
Had the BPS in a 10 gauge...kicked like a mule...so bought the Gold autoloader.
But, bought my son the 12 gauge BPS...really sweet gun. But, he's left handed so it works out really good for him with the bottom eject. They both probably pretty bullet proof. The Nova's are quite popular...and cheaper in price.

 Re: bps or super nova?
The guy I hunt with the most and he shoots a super nova and had trigger problems this past season. The other 5 years I have hunted with him, no problems

 Re: bps or super nova?
I've had both and the bps is faster it has a shorter stroke on chambering in the next shell I like mine that's why I got read of the nova I had

 Re: bps or super nova?
Your 870 gave you so many years of good service..... Why try to fix something that ain't broke!?
I hunted with a BPS a few times back in the day, never liked it as much as the Wingmaster.

 Re: bps or super nova?
Having shouldered and fired the 870 - nova - bps there is a vast difference in the way they hit your cheek and point.... BPS 3" is my go to gun... Although I cut my teeth with an A5 - I am deadlier on shots 2 and 3 with a pump....
Each guy may have a different favorite due to his physical traits....
My 2 favorites are the cheap as dirt Mossberg 500 and BPS both in 3" cause of the way they shoulder ( for me ) and because I like the shorter stroke of the 3" versions better than the 3 1/2" versions.... The 870 feels "wierd" for some reason to me - but I still kill most of the birds I fire on - it just doesn't "feel right".... If the 870 feels good to you - stick with it....
3 1/2" shells don't offer but a slightly greater kill percentage in ducks for a guy that can shoot ---- big difference with the honkers but not ducks....
Test 'em if you can and put over a box thru each to see what works - for you...

 Re: bps or super nova?
I have replaced many a rt shell latches on a bps, If that holds any weight Smoother pump than most and a very reliable ejector. The extractor Spring will wear out w a good bit of shooting The Novas I repaired were mostly due to miss use in not cleaning salt water out which corroded the sheet metal inserts in the action. Sometime I would have to replace the trigger housing bc it would allow the carrier to drop below its designed position. Trigger group is plastic so can't really repair worn plastic. Both are good guns

 Re: bps or super nova?
Somebody's probably about to give me shit when I say this, but here goes:
BPS was my first shotgun. Got it when I was probably 8 or 10 (20 Ga. Youth Model). Sweet ass gun! When I was younger, I was good about wiping it down and spraying oil inside of it after I'd use it, but as time went on, I got lazy. The really bad part is that I don't guess I ever took the time to learn how to truly break it down beyond removing the barrel. As for an 870 or any of my other guns, I can get them down to the most basic of parts. I tell you that to tell you this: That 20 Gauge BPS is close to 20 years old, has had many thousands of shells put through it, has survived dove hunting (sand and dry dirt), has survived duck hunting (fresh and salt water and mud), has survived a kid's abuse (general bullshit), and it has never once been completely broken down and cleaned. Furthermore, it has never once needed any sort of repair or service, FINALLY and most impressive to me, I've NEVER seen it jam!
It's an unbelievable gun, and I'll never get rid of it!

 Re: bps or super nova?
I've had a nova for the last 3 seasons and that thing got totally submerged in brackish water the first season i had it, I finished the hunt with no problem and when I got home I rinsed it with fresh water then cleaned and oiled it good and it never gave me any problems. I love that gun.

 Re: bps or super nova?
Lots of opinions so I'll give mine.
I bought one when they first came out and I haven't run 5 boxes of shells through it. It has to be the sloppiest shotgun I own, trigger pull and pump action wobble. Recoil is very bad with heavy hunting loads.
Now I let a friend use it and he loved it. The gun does point well and is tough I'll just never buy another one. As a matter of fact I think about selling mine often I just don't sell guns once I buy them.
If I had to choose I'd take a which ever gun fits you best. I like a bps or the older 870's myself.

 Re: bps or super nova?
had a BPS 12 gauge 3" for 4 years, cleaned it everytime i used it and 2 seasons ago during on a good hunt it started jamming halfway through the hunt and then the shell eventually siezed in the barrel. same thing happened last year so i threw it in the water and got an M2. ive had the M2 only 7 months and i love it so far but its too soon to tell how durable it is. Also the BPS is damn near impossible to put back together once you take it apart.

 Re: bps or super nova?
I can disassemble the nova pretty quick. It breaks down into 4-5 pieces which includes the pins that hold the trigger in place. I like that in a gun.

 Re: bps or super nova?
i used Black cloud, hevi-shot and some winchesters (all 3in) , all 3 work fine at the begenning of hunts but as the gun heats up after say, 10 shots it always starts jammimng like this. i would end up having to take the barrel off after every shot and force the shell out. not what you wanna be doing when the duck are coming in. on this particular hunt my buddy had his dads brand new browning gold and a 3" winchester shell siezed in the chamber. i was pretty pissed off with brownings on that day. i havent shot my bps since but ill try some new shells and see if thats the problem.
